Mac OS X SlingPlayer pushed back 90 days

“Despite our initial intent to deliver a Mac/OSX version of the SlingPlayer in Q2’06, we are moving our target to Q3’06,” Jeremy Toeman, VP of Market Development for Sling Media writes over on his Sling Media blog. “As you are probably aware, the Mac landscape changed dramatically this year, and as a small company, we chose to shift development paths to deliver universal Mac support. The net effect of this shift has been to delay our Mac plans by about 90 days. One positive note is we have tested the PC SlingPlayer software on “dual boot” Macs, using either Boot Camp or Parallels, and the performance in these environments is quite impressive. Ultimately, we recognize that many Mac users have high standards for digital media products, and we are working hard to ensure we will meet and exceed those standards with the upcoming SlingPlayer for Mac.”

Here are the current plans:

• At some point right around the beginning of July we will begin the official signup process to become a Mac beta tester (just as we’ve done for all prior beta programs). I will announce this here (for anyone who has emailed either Becky or myself in the past, we will remind you when the signup process goes live, but you will need to sign up then)
• Our public beta test (the one anyone can download) should be made available in late August.
• Commercial release will occur in September.

One important piece of good news: we can put to rest the debate over charging. There will be no additional fees to download the SlingPlayer Mac software.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

  1. Wow, MacDailyNews actually included an attribution for this article (iPodNN).

Proper attribution should be given for all articles, instead of sending MDN readers links to unspecified web sites. The current policy of not giving the attribution is amateurish.

  2. I work in a communication college, and the one thing most of the people here fail to do properly is communicate! The official site has an FAQ, but guess what’s not on there? “What is Slingbox?” Reminds me of all the hype around the Segway — all the pet names for “It.”

Well now I know. (Only had to dig into the forum and look up someone’s comment about an article on Slingbox that failed to describe what it does.) For those not in the know, it streams live TV over broadband.

Considering the state of TV, this is not big news for me.

  3. Tom, read the forums at slingmedia.com, and you’ll see the product is selling like crazy and has a lot of followers. A lot of people want to watch their shows while on the road, on their laptops, etc. Slingmedia is selling the product well.

So yes, a lot of people don’t think this is a “crappy” product, and they do care. You don’t see a place for it in your life, great. But others do. It is not crappy.

  4. Fortunately Mac users can run the current PC version under XP…

Get used to a world where software vendors can use that as an excuse to stop developing specifically for the Mac, or get around to doing the Mac version “later”.

  5. I just bought a Slingbox two days ago to run under Boot Camp until the Mac version comes out. This is an amazing device.

The only problem. Apple’s Airport Extreme doesn’t support Universal Plug and Play so you have to manually configure the IP address during the setup. I couldn’t get it to work (I’m sure it was my fault).

Anyone configure their Airport Extreme willing to point me to the way to do this I’d be very appreciative.
