Apple today unveiled the new iMac G5, featuring the high-performance G5 processor and a totally new design that integrates the entire computer right into the flat panel display. The iMac G5 packs a complete computer system into a mere two inches of depth – the world’s thinnest desktop computer. The new line offers 17- or 20-inch active matrix widescreen LCDs and G5 processors running up to 1.8 GHz starting at just $1,299.

PC users has already the eMac at $799 if they are still in “get me the cheapest cheapo” mentality.
If it’s solid in terms of heat handling and if it is quiet, and no problems occur with the vertical CD and HD, then I’ll buy one.
I hope that the video card wil be replaced soon, though! This all in one design is a true cost saver for Apple too! Servicing the previous iMac, the dome, is difficult. Now all the service guy has to do is remove the back. And the box will also be very small so bringing it to the service guy will be no pain. Hopefully the quality control will be good this time.
Now that they got G5 into a 2″ enclosure. It will soon be coming to a Powerbook near you. Next WWDC in 2005 or even as early as MWSF in January. Finger crossed.

This is using the Trojan horse iPod to shift units to PC people. Shrewd as heck. PC users won’t care about G5 etc, they will think “a computer as neat as my iPod”.
HOWEVER, I personally think in my case an eMac is the answer. That’s because I want a mac for my 8 year old son. I have a G4 Quicksilver and a dual 2ghz G5 and an apple 23″ cinema display. The girlfriend has a 12″ G4 ibook.
The iMac is not needed here.
What’s my point? My point is the lines are clear, powermac for me (I use it for work as a self-employed designer) the girlfriend switched from a PC and has not looked back and now it’s time I get shorty off the PII PC and into the real world.
Now Apple needs to do some ads showing off OSX, I reckon Tiger’s release would be ideal especially given all the bits Windoze is dropping to get Shoehorn out before we all die of old age.

I remember when the iLamp G4 (I mean iMac, and yes I do own one and love it) gave me the shock and awe when Steve Jobs unveiled it to the world. I was like; “is he CRAZY?!”, but then you saw one up close and just end up liking the thing more and more.
This time with the iMac G5, there was no “shock and awe” value, but I do like the design and wouldn’t mind having one myself.

So out of curiousity I went to the Gateway site. Oh my god Jeff, are you talking about the Profile series? The Profile to the iMac is like a dump truck to a Ferrari in terms of form factor. And there is really no difference in price (unless you count that the Profile comes with no software). What are you thinking?

Following in the footsteps of the iPod, iBook and Cinema Display, this new iMac has style rather then fashion. Where most of today’s computers look clunky, Apple continues to produce exquisite -looking product. If one doesn’t like “minimalist” design, then of course they would probably think the new iMac is “ugly”. The crowd at the Expo, mostly Europeans, understand the ethos of modern design better then most average Americans. They were ecstatic over the look of the new iMac. When the first LCD iMac was introduced to a MW crowd in the U.S. there was mostly stunned silence. This is even better and in person it should be a knock-out. Looking forward to reading hands on reaction to the computer from attendees at the Expo.
If I was shopping for a desktop computer I would buy this. It is powerful, unique, a space saver and well-equipped to run OS X 10.4 next year.
My only concern is the Front Side Bus speed which for the first time in a G5 computer is less than half of the processor rating. What is the story with that?

Logical evolution, but obsolete graphic chip, probably due to heat problems.
Microsoft pauses on Longhorn and Apple gives the world a half-hearted attempt at computer design.
1. There are no more Firewire ports with the new iMac.
2. USB and Firewire ports are, again, located inconveniently on the BACK of the machine. Why not side mointed ports?
3. Who needs USB 1.1 anyhow? Those two extra 1.1 USB ports on the keyboard are practically worthless.
4. One must purchase a VESA mount to allow the iMac to rotate. Why couldn’t Apple make this a standard feature or Apple store option?
5. I expected a machine with a small footprint and could switch out LCD monitors, not be stuck with a restricted all-in-one design.
6. Lastly, the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics processor seems conspicuously underpowered for a new line of iMacs.
Other than that, it’s just simply wonderful.

Meat of Moose…. Err since when has the iMac not been an all-in-one design?? You want flexibility? Buy a PowerMac G5! iMac is aimed squarly home at its target market. When i heard the rumors about the iMac G5 i was afraid that all i would see was something that looked like Sony’s VAIO V1. Apple have pulled off something amazing, an entire computer that can be wall mounted!!!! Hmm, now lets just go into partnership with Elgato, boost the screen size’s to 23″ & 32″ and bring this sweet baby into the living room! Dreams aside, compared to the old iMac G4 range this iMac offers amazing value for money! I mean a 20″ Superdrive for �1349, thats �400 less than the 20″ G4 iMac, only critique for apple…. Memory, if its less than 512, why bother! Apart from that, hats off, amazing job!
Ok I was a little harsh. Its not a piece of crap. It looks ok. But I still have a major problem with the graphics card. Its really unacceptable. Doom 3 will be out for OS X and this card will not be able to play it well at all. And this IS a consumer machine which means its for families which means kids which means games.
Apple, put a better graphics card in this and maybe you’ll have something decent.
And please don’t say entry level PC’s don’t have good graphics cards. You are right. But there is a difference. I could put an Ultra 6800 in a $400 PC because its possible. You’re stuck with the 5200 in the iMac.

When will Apple stop crippling the video on their consumer machines? No monitor spanning in this day and age? Apple needs to make a headless, expandable, low-end tower. They really do. To people who buy low-end PC’s, expandability is a selling point, WHETHER THEY USE IT OR NOT! People also don’t like to seem like they are wasteful, so if they have a perfectly good, functioning monitor, and just want the computer replaced, they are going to avoid all-in-one designs. The PowerMac G5 is fine for the high-end, but Apple desperately needs a low-end tower. If they made one, I guarantee you that their market share will increase substantially.
Picture this: iMac G5 with Bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse. The ONLY cable you need is a power cable for the computer/monitor.

I dont see the average DOOM 3 player buying a PC for price. Most GOOD gamers are about POWER, and then get a G5 tower. This is a consumer PC withg a descent chip for part time gamers who like the SIMS and Warcraft.
Oh and that $400 PC has no ethernet for playing online and you had to buy your awesome graphics card seperate because it came with Intel integrated grafx with shared RAM and worse of all, Windows.
I still prefer using my Cube to my in-laws new Dell.

Most PCs come with FX5200s standard _at best_, many have “onboard graphics”, such as the Intel Extreme Graphics or SiS chipsets. I have a Geforce 4 Go 4200 in a laptop which plays almost all new games at a decent frame rate. Sure, you can’t max out the settings with a 5200, but it’s not a dog. It’s just a compact, cheap, low power card with decent though not spectacular performance.
As a proportion of total PCs out there, very few are using the latest Radeon & GeForce cards. Most people who play games get by on “medium” graphical settings. If you must have 8xFSAA & antistropic & everything with pixel shading everywhere, then this is clearly not for you.

My iMac G4 has three cables – the power cable and the split two cables for the pro speakers.
I like the iMac G5. I want one. It doesn’t take anything away from my iMac G4.
If you need more than a Nvidia 5200 graphics card then you need to go buy a Power Mac. These are CONSUMER machines afterall and for most consumers the 5200 is plenty enough. And it is fully Core Image compatible as well so it won’t be obsolete when Tiger comes out. I must say I’m very impressed especially considering the $300 price cuts on the mid range 17″ and high end 20″ models. The low end stays the same at $1,299, but goes from a 15″ to a 17″ widescreen display. Apple will sell a ton of these. I just feel bad for those that paid more recently for the G4 versions because these new G5 models are a FAR better deal for the money. Great job (again) guys.

I like it…but here’s my question. If Apple can build a complete computer with 17″ LCD monitor and sell it for $1299 – why does their regular 17″ LCD monitor (no computer) still cost $1299?
It’s fantastic. These will sell more than the swing-arm iMacs, they are a better style. These will be great for offices, especially the low-end model. Businesses love space and cost saving.
I wouldn’t know about hanging it on the wall – what about access to the USB and Firewire ports?
I agree with alot of the comments here. Apple already has an entry level/buget pc. The emac. I would have liked to have seen apple beef up the imac a little more, maybe even the possibility of expansion (video card). I really loved the previous imac. This one looks more like what the next emac should have looked like. I don’t think it’s ugly but when I look at it and read the specs, I think emac, not imac. Overall I would say I’m a little dissapointed with the design. I had been holding out on buying until the new imac came out, but I think I’ll save up a little more and get a Powermac instead. I didn’t want another tower but the imac doesn’t seem to have enough value for the buck. Looking forward to see the next imac.

My first impression: not great. Certainly not like my first impression of the iMac G4, I had to have one. This one may grow on me, but there is no awe.

How do you hang on the wall when you have all the ports behind?
Buffy, to me, the difference between ports on the side and ports on the back is the difference between hanging it on the wall or not. I’m not one for pinched wires. Maybe I’m ignorant on this one, but my impression is that I wouldn’t be hanging it anywhere if I’ve got ports on the back. A person can definitely go wireless for most common things, but I’d probably get the lower capacity hard drive since I already have an external FW drive.
My feelings on the design are mixed. My first thought when I saw it was also Gateway. There do seem to be a couple of things that weren’t thought through well enough (the high disk drive placement was already mentioned too). I do love the price point though. For my purposes, it would be a great machine (I probably wouldn’t wall hang it anyway) for the price.

Mr. Bill, $1299 would be for the 20″ Cinema display. The discontinued 17″ Studio display was $699.
Ok, I can see it now. With Bluetooth and Airport installed, the only cord hanging off this puppy would be the power cord. So when you aren’t using it, you shine a couple of spotlights on it and it’s art. There’s only one word for it, WOW!

I can easily see businesses snatching these up for major number crunching, because to do this in a Wintel box requires… Okay, you CAN’T do this in Windows!! Yea, you can find a 64-bit server-class Dell and a 64-bit version of XP, but it is totally stripped down and can only (very poorly) emulate 32-bit XP for running non-64-bit aps.
This is well over 5 years in advance of what ANYTHING ANYONE else is doing, and y’all are bitchin’ about the speakers and style?!!! YOU go cram a 64-bit Intel computer into a 2″ thick LCD monitor and make it run current 32-bit XP aps FASTER than ever before, and THEN we can talk about how innovative Apple is or is not.

With a max of 2GB of RAM, you can’t take advantage of the one thing that everybody would want a 64-bit computer for. On the other hand, 64-bits is more than 32, which makes a good selling point to the unwashed masses.

Wall mount. guys. This is not the same as hanging a picture on a wall. The mount holds the monitor (in this case, the entire iMac) a short distance away from the wall; further if it’s a swivel mount, as all but the low-end ones are.

After the stunning looks of the outgoing iMac design, to come up with this is nothing more than a design regression.
Sure, the guts (sans video card) may be better but from a design point of view this is hideous.
A huge bezel, that big block of white cpace at the bottom looks like a no-man’s land, and far less ergonomic than the previous version.
The wall mounting capabilities are cute, until you have to lean over your desk and reach up in the air just to insert or remove a dvd.
They tried too hard to get it to match the new displays. It wasn’t necessary, and the look has suffered because of it.
I will reserve final judgement for when I get to see one in person, but this is nowhere near the wow factor iMac2 created…
Relax guys, the fact that we are not crazy about it could be that it is aimed at the PC market.

Boring… The switch to G5 was expected. It is not nearly as nice ergonomically as the current iMac (whose screen you can move with a single finger), nor as graceful from a design standpoint. The bigger problem is that this leaves a GAPING HOLE in the Apple line up with respect to low- and mid-range towers. With the current virus and security problems, as well as the new servers, Apple has a real opportunity to encroach on the government/corporate market (which dwarfs individual consumer purchases). But no business buyer wants to throw out a perfectly good flat panel or CRT just to replace the cpu, and they do like expandability even if they don’t use it (as someone else noted). Apple is walking away from a significant marketshare opportunity just because of some bone-headed “strategy” to focus SOLELY on consumers and high-end prosumers. They should at least have SOMETHING for business users other than dual-cpu, high-end machines, even if they don’t advertise/promote them. As someone who has started to incorporate Macs into my small business, this is going to make it damn hard to justify (to our board) switching any more of our computers. Very annoying and, I bet, totally misguided.
Concerning heat: there are 3 separate fans: one for the G5, one for the HD and one for the power supply. Makes for pinpointing heat sources and the thing is just as noisy as whisper.
On the back there is an air intake hole. Tricky but effective.

U-G-L-Y. Great price to performance ratio. Thing will rock on 3D games right out of the box. Apple Logo is too big. When Apple needed to come out with a killer computer they missed the boat…on DESIGN of all things. Oh well, I can’t imagine this is going to inspire the waves of switchers we all wanted. Well, Apple has a year and a half to get their shit together, otherwise everyone will buy Longhorn and then it will be another 10 years before they have this kind of opportunity again.

the computer has come a long way from the Classic. remember the small screen? Imagine the sight of a hundred of these babies in a computer lab. I can see why they haven’t put the ports on the sides…it would look like some monster with wierd wires sticking out of its head. What’s great about the iMac is that it makes the old iMacs look….old. And of course the iMac, even an old iMac makes everything else look older.
The Gateway does not look similar at all. It looks as if the screen relies upon the base heavily, where the new iMac has reduced even its reliance on the ground to a THIN METAL STRIP. This product is a statement.

This looks stylish but not too much, innovative but not too much, new look but professional not to be out of place on clerk desks or on dentists secretaries counters.

I hope that touch screen and we can take the foot off, so it would become mac tablet
oddly enough every single PC user I’ve shown this to adores it. perhaps it really wasn’t targeted for the installed base at all. even though I still dislike it, it may prove to be a great seller.

we’ve been screaming at them to hurry up and make an ad that non-computer folks will like — here it is! i just wonder when they’ll be putting it on the air…
yep, seen it at the Keynote. Finally an ad that talks to non-Mac users. Not just extraordinary scene cuts, and one single word in all the ad.
You need to talk to non-Mac users as if they were children ignorant of the most obvious things.
The iMac works great with the 5200 ultra card – Apple assures us that it gets triple the frame rate in UT2004 and Halo, which were already getting about 20fps (http://www.barefeats.com/piei.html).
The 5200 is the same card that is the default for the dual 2Ghz G5. It is not a bad card at all. Anything better would have generated more heat and noise (fan), and offering people different cards as a custom configuration would have added to the prices for the product line.
As they are, they make sense. No use raising the prices another $50 for people just in case they are not happy with 50fps in Halo and UT2004. The iMacs really hit the sweet spot. The last ones were impossible to take seriously for most people – too cute looking. These new iMacs look elegant and sleek, compared to cute and frumpy for the the previous iMac.
Comparing the new iMac design to the Gateway all-in-one is like comparing a Mac truck to a BMW because they both have four tires and a steering wheel. If you want to see “ugly,” check out the Gateway website! People differ greatly in their ability to appreciate the difference between good and bad design. It takes all kinds to make a world.
I’m with noxlady on the ad. That’s a great little intro movie. I already find the design growing on me. One photo I saw of it on display in Paris made me think of a giant iPod with the bottom half cut off. My wife came in and saw it on the computer this morning and her immediate reaction was very positive (might be an easy sell when the cash gets in hand

I think that the iMac is the best thing on the market for switcher and i would defenetly buy on compaired to the gateway who would say that the gateway is better it must of bin a Mircrosoft employe
