Apple unveils new iMac G5, the world’s thinnest desktop computer

Apple today unveiled the new iMac G5, featuring the high-performance G5 processor and a totally new design that integrates the entire computer right into the flat panel display. The iMac G5 packs a complete computer system into a mere two inches of depth – the world’s thinnest desktop computer. The new line offers 17- or 20-inch active matrix widescreen LCDs and G5 processors running up to 1.8 GHz starting at just $1,299.

“Just like the iPod redefined portable digital music players, the new iMac G5 redefines what users expect from a consumer desktop,” said Philip Schiller, Apple

  1. I love it. They put an entire computer into something smaller than some of the early LCD monitors. Amazing how far we’ve come.

The value isn’t so great though. Let’s see some better video cards Apple!

  2. What a piece of crap. This is supposed to get people to switch from their PC’s? We’ve got Gateways at work that look just like this. Where’s the innovation Apple? An Nvidia 5200 card? Come on. That can barely play solitaire. Forget any video games.

So it won’t be for playing games. Just for surfing the net or email. So what makes this something someone wants to pay $2000 for instead of a $800 PC?

Once again, Apple fails to understand the consumer market. I’m so glad I bought my PowerMac.

  3. 2 inches? What about heat issues? Do I smell technical solutions applied that will open the road to a Powebook G5?

I needed to upgrade my old G3 desktop and this would nicely fit.

  4. Jeff: OS X. Anything running Windows could be for free for what concerns me. So yours is a moot point.

PC users has already the eMac at $799 if they are still in “get me the cheapest cheapo” mentality.

  5. I hope that the video card wil be replaced soon, though! This all in one design is a true cost saver for Apple too! Servicing the previous iMac, the dome, is difficult. Now all the service guy has to do is remove the back. And the box will also be very small so bringing it to the service guy will be no pain. Hopefully the quality control will be good this time.

  6. The Apple website it promoting this thing very heavily to iPod users (“the ultimate iPod accessory” on one page) and as a gaming machine. You can hang it on the wall too ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  7. “So it won’t be for playing games.”

I could care less about games.

“Just for surfing the net or email.”

Don’t have enough creativity to enjoy working with iLife?

“So what makes this something someone wants to pay $2000 for instead of a $800 PC?”

Now that comment is just dumb. So you don’t have to run Windows. Duh!

  8. The sizzling graphics processor and next-generation high-bandwidth architecture kicks 3D games and graphics into high gear, with three times the frame rate as the previous iMac in Unreal Tournament 2004. NVIDIA graphics provides hardware transform and lighting (T&L), per-pixel shading and drop-dead gorgeous effects at high resolutions. All models deliver over a billion textured pixels per second and an advanced Live FX engine engineered to generate the most lifelike characters. With Quartz Extreme, the graphics processors take over transform and lighting calculation functions from the CPU, freeing the G5 processor to perform essential system tasks faster than ever before.
