Halide Mark III has been updated to version 3.2 with dedicated support for the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture system, removing the four-stop limit in Apple’s Camera app and letting users pick any ƒ-stop across the lens’s full range.
Apple’s stock Camera app restricts iPhone 18 Pro owners to four aperture settings from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0. That system is meant to improve low-light performance by about 50 percent and give more optical control over depth of field. Halide 3.2 drops the preset restriction so any value inside that range can be selected.
The update offers two ways to use the control. In Aperture Priority, the user sets the ƒ-stop and Halide chooses shutter speed and ISO for a correct exposure. In Manual mode, all three settings can be set by hand, including ISO, which Apple’s Camera app still does not expose as a manual control. The developers have said they are considering ƒ-stop presets in a later update based on feedback.
Version 3.2 also adds two film simulations. Dawn is described as filmic warmth in the mid-tones and highlights, with rich but gentle shadows and subtle complementary cool colors. Quicksilver is a high-contrast, muted-color look meant to evoke a silver-retention process, positioned as a midpoint between color and black-and-white. The update also adds a 16:9 shooting mode.
Halide 3.2 is available on the App Store. In the U.S. it is priced at $69.99 as a one-time purchase or $19.99 a year.
MacDailyNews Note: Lux Optics, the makers of Halide, detailed the release in their announcement: Halide 3.2: The App for Aperture.
