Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook participated in a high-stakes U.S. delegation to Beijing this week — the first presidential visit to China in nearly a decade. With most of Apple’s hardware still manufactured there and China representing its largest market outside the U.S., any easing of tariffs and tensions could significantly benefit the company’s operations, costs, and competitive position. Investors are watching closely as AAPL trades near all-time highs.

Catie Hogan for The Motley Fool:

China is also Apple’s largest market outside the U.S. With competition rising there, Apple needs to be in the good graces of the Chinese government to avoid market-share losses.

An easing of tariffs and a move to friendlier U.S.-China relations is a win for Apple and its investors. A successful trip may mean securing Apple’s relationship with Chinese manufacturing partners, reducing costly tariffs, and maintaining or expanding access to the Chinese retail market. Cook needed this China trip to be a success, and thus far, it seems investors should be cautiously optimistic.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s iPhone is killing it in China, with shipments surging 20% in first quarter. Plus, Apple set March quarter revenue records and grew double digits in every geographic segment, including strong double-digit growth in Greater China.
