Apple’s iPhone Pocket is coming Friday. Who’s up for a $230 sock?

The development and design of iPhone Pocket unfolded in close collaboration with the Apple Design Studio, which provided insight into design and production throughout.

ISSEY MIYAKE and Apple on Tuesday unveiled iPhone Pocket. Inspired by the concept of “a piece of cloth,” its singular 3D-knitted construction is designed to fit any iPhone as well as all pocketable items. Beginning Friday, November 14th, it will be available at select Apple Store locations and on apple.com in France, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and America.

Rachel Kurzius and Shane O’Neill for The Washington Post:

We gathered Style writer Shane O’Neill and Lifestyle writer Rachel Kurzius to discuss all things Pocket.

Rachel Kurzius: On a very personal level, I felt vindicated when I saw the Pocket. I have been wearing my phone on a leash for more than two years — I have a cross-body strap that attaches to my phone case… The iPhone Pocket is probably more chic (and significantly more pricey!) than what I’ve got going on, but it has the same central reason for being: All you really need to navigate the modern world is your smartphone. It’s communication, information, wallet, all in one. What about you, Shane? Will I see you donning the iPhone Pocket?

SO: You will not. I really wanted to like this but I think it’s a miss… Put bluntly: If it were cute enough, I would be willing to shell out $149 for a Miyake-designed phone carrier. I could especially justify it to myself by saying, “I use my phone all day every day, so why not?” But this ain’t it.

  1. I’m not gonna get one, but I think this is not as expensive as people seem to think. Because it stands time. Apple used to sell e.g. leather sleeve for iPhone 12 for 129$, and now strap & bumber for air for 98$. Cheaper, yes, but they fit one model. If you replace your phone every year, you need to get something new every year (or, even worse, throw the old one away and get nothing as was the case with the sleeve — no matter how much you loved it, it was ever available only for the 12). This is not only more versatile by supporting many current, past and future models, it can fit more than just the phone. So in long run it’s not that overpriced vs other options for carry and protection.

Also, there’ll be cheap Chinese knockoffs next week. And a boatload of different designs from multiple brands, if you don’t like the style.

    1. I agree.

If you don’t like the fun discussion, don’t get involved in it.

If you don’t have a sense of humor and are irritated that other people do; don’t throw your cold water personality all over the conversation.

Just let other people have their fun and move on with your day.

Don’t like it, go to the next article. Case closed

  2. Sock it to me! is from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In TV show. It brings back memories.
I’m not sure how many people will buy that thing, but imagine if it actually does become some sort of ridiculous fashion statement for iPhone users. Mind will be blown. That thing looks snatchable for the short version. I expect the Android smartphone versions to be offered after everyone makes fun of the Apple version.

    1. Bugger I was going to do the “sock it to him” line. Bummer!

Look there are three ways to go with this.

Buy it now and sell it in five years time
Buy it because you want to
Don’t buy it because IT’S A WASTE OF BLOODY MONEY. And then just bag the crap out of it because it’ll nave less impact on the world than an emoji.

Um, what version of the OS does it use, Tahoe per chance?

Even the Pippin was better than this.

    1. When Sony came out with the Walkman they advertised it in a person’s shirt pocket. The only way they could do it was to have a shirt with an oversized pocket.

It’s a sock. It does the same thing as a sock so it’s a sock.

Hey Apple how about you fix Mail and Safari. Nah, give them a pocket, er sock.

  3. Hey Apple, I just read that in New York people are asking for socks because they’re homeless or just plain cold. So why don’t you donate some socks to people who need them…just plain socks, to keep them warm. Steve would’ve done it and now you’ll have all of those pockets/socks left over and you’ll be wondering what to do with them. There you go.
