Apple is expanding advertising on iOS, with plans to introduce new ads as early as next year. The company is prioritizing Apple Maps, enabling restaurants and other businesses to pay for prominent placement in the app’s search results.
Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:
The concept is quite similar to Search Ads inside of the App Store, where developers can pay for their software to appear in a promoted slot based on user queries. I’m told the Maps version will have a better interface than what Google and other companies offer inside of mapping services. The Apple approach also will leverage AI to ensure that results are relevant and useful.
The big risk Apple faces here is a potential consumer backlash. Some customers are already unhappy that the iPhone has been turned into a digital billboard for services like AppleCare+, Apple Music, Apple TV, and Fitness+. The company also pushes web-like ad slots within Apple News. When you consider that an iPhone can cost up to $2,000, some see this as an unseemly money grab.
MacDailyNews Take: Somehow, we’ll survive if a company pays Apple to appear in Maps search, especially if they’re relevant and even useful.

Oh. Great.
Why? would you clutter the map with ads?
I’m busy looking at the road and listening to directions and now & again glancing at the map. Do I have time to look at a freakin’ ad?
No!
Who ever came up with this plan– I hope your vehicle has perpetual transmission problems.
I do not understand what Apple is doing wrong? Map related ads are very useful.
I remember a time when Apple refused to clutter their laptops with the “Intel Inside” sticker that I’m sure was made fun of by Apple rumor sites and posters alike.
Google AI on the subject. “Steve Jobs actively ensured that Macs did not have “Intel Inside” stickers because he wanted to maintain the product’s brand integrity and avoid what he saw as cluttered, “tacky” branding.”
So, Apple Maps is going, according to Apple’s founder, “tacky”.
My, times they are a changing!
Clearly another case where Apple is putting their profits ahead of what customers want. They no longer serve us just the almighty dollar.
No adverts, thank you.
I wouldn’t get my knickers in a knot over this mark gurman doesn’t have much of a record and mostly just repeats what’s been published elsewhere, frequently getting it wrong. I really can’t see why Apple would risk pissing off it’s very loyal customers for what would be a trivial amount of money.
So Maps is far inferior to Google Maps. Now Cook thinks ads will work? Thats how you kill the app.
