The Trump administration is negotiating with beleaguered Intel to acquire a government stake in the company, Bloomberg News reports citing sources familiar with the matter. Such an agreement would bolster Intel’s delayed Ohio factory hub project, according to these sources. The discussions follow President Donald Trump’s demand for the removal of Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, whom he labeled “highly conflicted” due to prior connections with China.
The plans stem from a meeting this week between Trump and Tan, the people said. While the details are still being sorted, the idea is for the US government to pay for the stake, one of the people said. Another cautioned that the plans remain fluid. The talks could still end without an agreement.
Shares of Intel climbed as much as 8.9% on Thursday. The stock closed 7.4% higher at $23.86 in New York, giving the company a market value of about $104.4 billion. The shares continued rising as much as 4% further after the close of regular trading.
“Discussion about hypothetical deals should be regarded as speculation unless officially announced by the administration,” said White House spokesman Kush Desai.
Intel declined to comment on the discussions. In a statement, a representative said the company is “deeply committed to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen US technology and manufacturing leadership.”
“We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump administration to advance these shared priorities, but we are not going to comment on rumors or speculation,” Intel said…
A chip industry pioneer, Intel has struggled in recent years, hurt by the loss of market share and its technological edge… Earlier this year, the [Ohio factory hub] build-out was delayed until the 2030s, and the company said in July that it would further slow the Ohio plan. Since taking over in March, Tan has focused more on getting Intel’s financial house in order.
Trump has won Ohio in all three of his presidential elections, and Republicans flipped a Senate seat there in 2024. Vice President JD Vance served as a senator from the state.

Capitalism and the “free” market… whatever happened to that idea…Govt owned stakes sounds a bit like socialism/communism. Does the USA not take a dim view of Chinese’s govt linked companies.
This is insane. Can you imagine the gnashing of teeth if a Democrat even suggested this idea? In 2009, as part of the plan to bail out the three biggest U.S. automakers, then-President Barack Obama’s administration provided emergency loans while in exchange exerting greater control over their business decisions. At the time, conservatives likened it to the actions of Italian strongman Benito Mussolini.
Not to mention the Mafia shakedown of Nvidia & AMC, “allowing” them to export their products for a 15% cut, which is almost certainly unconstitutional.
The DOD becoming the biggest shareholder of MP Materials.
The President of the USA receiving a “golden share” of US Steel.
It goes without saying that negotiating a deal with a private company on behalf of the state is an egregious abuse of executive power. By owning stock in a corporation, the government assumes the roles of both a shareholder and a regulator of the corporation. The predominant concern when the government owns stock in a corporation is that the government will attempt to ‘induce the corporation to pursue political or policy goals rather than maximize the corporation’s value for the proportionate benefit of all its shareholders.'”
To quote Daring Fireball:
“No cause for alarm here. Just a bit of a sea change. The Republican Party has always been in favor of social ownership of the means of production. Just like we have always been at war with Eastasia. Sane steady leadership from our 80-year-old dear leader, who is definitely not succumbing rapidly to a dangerous mix of dementia, megalomania, and paranoia.”
Shades of our past Sputnik and his/her “fawning” of Microsoft. Good tongue in cheek post. Excellent!
Fascism. NOT GOOD! We do NOT want Government buying into private company. This “Public/Private” partnership crap is bad enough as-is, putting the thumb on the scale for companies that get Government support, it’s all bad. Bad. Bad.
I’ve, for the most part, really appreciated this administration, but this is a horrible move. Horrible. Let Intel fail. It’s really become a failed business, and chips move so fast, to get these guys recovered? I don’t think so.
This of it this way. What would be the next steps to this? Hampering Intel’s competition so Intel can “compete” which is protectionism, and it starts a spiral. The rest of the world gets ahead, while we are protecting failed companies. Move on Trump admin. Move on. Bad idea in so many ways and directions.
Exactly….. Apple being told to use intel processors ?? The USA is down the Trump rabbit hole … and it is getting Darcy down there
Dark…
Government taking control of a private company is equal to socialism (ask Maduro if not). This is nuts. I do not see the usual president cheese cheering crowd in this news… why?
You would think that they might understand the many different government models, as opposed to economic models. But the cult prides itself in ignorance. All they can do is parrot the accusations of their handlers- other points of view are always bad, and dear leader can do no wrong. Dear leader even claimed he would fix the system so people would not have to vote… another admission of his true colors.
When our favorite American President Trump said, “After that, you don’t have to worry about voting anymore… the country will be fixed and we won’t even need your vote anymore,” he meant that implementing a secure election system that would eliminate fraudulent votes, leading to such decisive Republican victories that turnout – to overcome Democrat ballot harvesting and drop box stuffing – will become less critical. The “won’t need your vote anymore” was imply hyperbole about the coming overwhelming margins rather than an intent to end voting.

“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly “Inaccurate,” Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election. We are now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting. All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED. WE WILL BEGIN THIS EFFORT, WHICH WILL BE STRONGLY OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THEY CHEAT AT LEVELS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, by signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections. Remember, the States are merely an “agent” for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to do. With their HORRIBLE Radical Left policies, like Open Borders, Men Playing in Women’s Sports, Transgender and “WOKE” for everyone, and so much more, Democrats are virtually Unelectable without using this completely disproven Mail-In SCAM. ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING, and everybody, IN PARTICULAR THE DEMOCRATS, KNOWS THIS. I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS. THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX, USING VOTING MACHINES THAT ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER, MUST END, NOW!!! REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!!! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” (August 18, 2025)
