No, Amazon was never going to commit the ‘confrontational and political act’ of listing tariff costs on products

Amazon has refuted baseless claims that it would display tariff impacts alongside product prices on its e-commerce platform, a move that sparked criticism from the Trump administration on Tuesday. Punchbowl News initially reported that Amazon would highlight tariff-driven price hikes on goods. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denounced the alleged plan as “a confrontational and politically motivated act.”

According to Washington Post reporter Jeff Stein, Amazon said it was never considering adding the additional cost caused by tariffs next to the price of goods on its main website, but rather was contemplating doing so on its low-cost Amazon Haul site.

“So this is another reason why Americans should buy American,” Leavitt added. “It’s another reason why we are onshoring critical supply chains here at home to shore up our own critical supply chain and boost our own manufacturing here.”

Trump had an acrimonious relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos during his first term in office, frequently criticizing Bezos over the Washington Post’s coverage of him… Bezos has since met with Trump and attended his inauguration alongside Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Amazon also donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund.

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote back in mid-March:

There’s an exceedingly simple way for countries to avoid reciprocal U.S. import tariffs. Whatever tariff level you want is the tariff level you impose. If you don’t wish to face U.S. import tariffs, don’t impose tariffs on U.S. products and services.

  1. The problem with the MDN take:

Tariffs are being imposed on all kinds of countries that have no tariff on US goods. And extremely high tariffs are being imposed on countries that have very small tariffs against US goods.

In some cases, like Canada Mexico, we have free trade agreements, signed by Trump himself. There are no tariffs imposed on the US goods by these countries because everyone agreed specifically to trade freely, and deeply integrate our supply chains across these borders because it benefits us all). Trump’s tariffs are in direct violation of the agreement he himself signed.

    1. Second problem with MDN take: multiple countries immediately offered to abandon tariffs altogether with the USA, and Peter Navarro’s response was, “Not interested.”

Third problem with MDN’s take: Amazon would merely saying what is true, highlighting outstanding results of Trump’s “most beautiful word in the dictionary.”

What exactly is “political” about pointing out something that is true?

This example shows how Orwellian the Trump administration has become, trying to bend reality to fit their narrative, somehow telling everyone, “pay no attention to what’s going on behind the curtain, just gaze at all the shiny objects you see in front of you.” Tariffs will make the USA rich! Taxes will be eliminated. The golden age of USA manufacturing has just begun!

  2. The reciprocal tariffs created by Trump were not calculated based on tariffs leveled on American products. They are based on the trade deficit with each country. As a result they are not fair, they just reflect the US capacity to compete against other countries. Trump is behaving like a spoiled child. If he can’t win by the rules he will cheat. He does it when playing golf and now when trying to fix the economy.

    1. DutchMacUser is correct. The formula used to calculate tariffs was absolutely bizarre/bonkers. Even more telling, if the USA had a trade surplus with a given country, it didn’t matter, Trump still slapped a tariff on their imports, “just because.”

Please refute if you are going to downvote.

  3. Trump’s tariff strategy is genius. Fix the trade deficits that shouldn’t be there in the first place and encourage American companies to bring back manufacturing to the U.S. Sticking with the status quo is a fool’s errand!
