Among the anticipated enhancements for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, two standout features aim to reduce iPhone dependency. While obviously not fully replacing your iPhone, the Ultra 3 will enable greater independence, making it easier to venture out without your phone.
Ryan Christoffel for 9to5Mac:
Two new connectivity features are coming that replicate existing iPhone features:
• 5G cellular
• Satellite messagingBoth of these technologies have been available on the iPhone for a while, so if you bring your iPhone everywhere with you, the Ultra 3’s upgrades won’t make as big a difference. But with 5G and satellite connectivity, Apple Watch Ultra 3 should provide a smoother, more seamless iPhone-free experience.
MacDailyNews Take: We’ve long left our iPhone behind when running and expect Apple Watch Ultra 3’s 5G and satellite connectivity to make that experience even better!

I also let the iPhone at home if I leave the house, and I use the Apple Watch Ultra the entire day for calls and to pay. A half day at work or if I go mountain biking. Especially at mountain biking it is very comfortable. Don‘t extra weight.
Often I ride with the bike deep in the forests without any cellular connection. So the best feature for me are the satellite connection. And if the Ultra 3 is more independent from the iPhone, is it more and more comfortable.
I never asked for an “iPhone replacement” tech media jerks. Unless the Apple Watch can take high-quality photos, allow me to read more than a sentence on the screen and have access to full iOS Safari, I’ll be carrying my iPhone everywhere I go. As if Apple hasn’t made it painfully obvious that they want us to buy every device they produce 😆 This business with “cannibalizing” old devices with new devices died with Jobs.
It would be even better if you didn’t have to pay a separate plan for the watch – not like you use both at once. It should be maybe a $2 add on at the most.
I often leave my iPhone behind in favor of Watch Ultra . Very freeing…. The only feature I miss on occasion is the ability to take photos. It seems impossible, but I hope the wizards at Apple someday find a way to allow photography without ruining the watch form-factor.
