When will Apple Maps and Google Maps use ‘Gulf of America,’ ‘Mount McKinley?’

Gulf of America

U.S. President Donald Trump swiftly issued a slew of executive actions following his inauguration last Monday, including an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and Denali to “Mount McKinley.” However, Apple Maps and Google Maps have yet to update their platforms to reflect these new names, though changes might occur in the near future.

Amanda Yeo for Mashable:

Issued on Monday, Trump’s executive order declared that Denali, the highest peak in North America, would be renamed Mount McKinley after the 25th U.S. president. The order also said the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the Gulf of America, directing the U.S. government’s Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico.

“[A]ll federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming,” Trump’s order read.

Neither Apple nor Google Maps appear to have removed any references to the Gulf of Mexico.

The fact that no changes seem to have been made does not mean none will be. Trump’s executive order included a 30-day timeframe for modifications to be made, with even the GNIS still listing the sea as the Gulf of Mexico and the summit as Denali.

MacDailyNews Take: As of publication, Apple Maps still labels the gulf as “Gulf of Mexico,” but a search of Apple Maps for “Gulf of America” brings the user to the proper place.

  1. America is a continent, not a country, so the retard currently sitting in the White House probably should name it the Gulf of the United States of America. Silly jealous childish attitude.

    1. The morons the Moron in chief wants to nominate can’t even name a country in South East Asia and thinks Korea, Japan and Australia are in South East Asia – why do we expect this ignorants to understand the difference between “America” and “United States of America”?

      1. Pete you are very Stupid! America has way more land mass touching the Gulf plus we invest way more into the gulf! This should have been done back in the early 1800’s, but here we are with the greatest president of the last 200 years putting America and Americans First!

    1. Eric Woehler – Poor TDS hater! I don’t understand you haters if your own country! There is something very wrong with your brains. Trump is putting America First weeding out corruption and theft of our tax dollars!
If your against that I’m against you!

  2. While I voted for Trump, I admit renaming the gulf and reinstating the previous name for the mountain does seem a little strange, Frankly, I think Trump is just trolling people who don’t put America first. If it were to be named today, the Gulf of America is a much more accurate name, whether or not you are referring to the continent of North America or the country of the United States of America. Mexico’s share of the North American continent is not that large. Mexico’s share of the coast line of the gulf is much smaller than the US. Frankly, as a history buff, I would prefer to leave the name alone.
The deal with McKinley vs Denali is different. I think that is simply a reaction against letting the woke left define our language. We use some Native names but not always. Massachusetts is named for a Native tribe, but Pennsylvania is named after an English politician. Obviously if naming something after an American politician is offensive, we should plan on renaming places named after politicians from other countries!
I don’t know how many Native language groups lived in North America, but each language group probably had their own name for geographic features.
In California, most place names date back to the Spanish era. The tallest mountain in Monterey County is Mt. Toro. (actually, it’s not that tall, but it’s the tallest we have.) Should we rename that with the name the Chumash used?
I like the name Denali, but in general, I think changing the names of places is foolish.

    1. But now GM has to do a recall to re-badge all their Denali trucks and SUVs. How is that putting America first?… Damn those pesky unintended consequences.

I suppose it’s really a “make work” project.

    1. In the next few years, the rest of the world will be cautious with a country led by a megalomaniac. The risk, with the decrees, is that there will be no more votes in the USA, and that Biff Tannen will have established an American 4th Reich.

    2. HaHaHa I love the fact that you’re a triggered ignorant person with hate in your heart! Nobody cares what you think! You can see that these idiot leaders are bending the knee to the felon! It’s just so comical that they say one thing and 5 minutes later they are going in the exact opposite direction!
We are moving from the Turd Years to the Golden Age!
You are just an organic speed bump!

  3. I and many other people i talk to in UK are now Re-evaluating what American brands they buy, that can be replace with non USA a goods. Protectionist policies are a two way street. I will be reducing my consumption of USA brands to the minimum, Which means i can the comfortably buy Apple products. But Nike products are toast, as are Gap and many others.

      1. Mexico is in North America retard. It’ll certainly be a golden age of illiteracy. To think we laughed at Americans when they were poor Yankee Doodle trying to emulate his betters, now Yankee Doodle knows more about macaroni than so much of the US population. Learn to read, write and think critically Stevie-poo.

Many folk aren’t leftists, but they have a really difficult time swallowing the purely retarded tripe thay comes from you people and your glassy eyes. Suck in the beer gut, accept that you’re stupid, and bow to your intellectual betters. You might learn something.
