Foldable MacBook survey update – mass production delayed significantly

1. Final display size spec confirmed at 18.8 inches. Apple has canceled the 20.25-inch design.

2. Due to technical challenges with the display and mechanical, the assembly mass production schedule has been pushed back from 1H26 to the end of 2027 or 2028.

3. Some market participants previously expected Apple to launch the foldable iPad in 2025, but the current supply chain survey indicates that the foldable iPad has no visibility. This may also be because some call this foldable MacBook a foldable iPad.

MacDailyNews Take: We really like our MacBook Pro keyboards when on the road, but we can image how useful a foldable MacBook could be, especially when opened fully to become a larger display for not only passively watching movies and videos, but also for use as a Mac with connected keyboard and mouse.

    1. Apple is going to be more late to the folding tech game than to any other market. This time I don’t think their “late but great” strategy is going to be as effective besides their significant ecosystem advantage. The displays will be sourced from Samsung and other suppliers who are providing OEMs with folding screens now. Samsung has been delivering foldables since 2019, will we really have to wait until 2029(!) for Apple’s first?

  1. A product can solve a problem, or provide a new way, and innovative way of doing the same thing, but better.

I do t need to dial a number I just press a name or tell Siri to call someone.

Is speaking to call someone solving a problem? No. It is adding new ways of doing the same thing, sometimes better.

A foldable MPB to become a giant iPad or raw display is interesting. Design a sweet foldable portable keyboard and it might be compelling….

The big problem in making it out as a MB? Laptop owners use keyboards non-stop for work emails, documents, spreadsheets, it never ends. And there is no way on any planet anywhere, that a touch keyboard works for even the lightest of keyboard work loads. Not a chance.

I should think this device would live better as an iPad for the creative, that at times can act as a MacBook. But its primary use is as a large tablet or tablet on the go with sometimes keyboard use when needed….
