Apple’s most popular service isn’t music or TV; besides the App Store, it’s iCloud storage

Apple to migrate legacy iCloud Documents and Data to iCloud Drive

A new consumer survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) finds that, among Apple device users, Apple’s most popular service, besides the App Store, of course, is iCloud storage.

Michael Levin and Josh Lowitz for CIRP:

We gather data on several services, including paid iCloud storage, AppleCare service contracts and extended warranties, Apple Music, TV+, and news and podcast services. Our customer survey questionnaires can’t quite capture activity in the App Store, another huge source of Services revenue.

Among Apple customers, paid iCloud storage is most common, with almost two-thirds of customers using it…

MacDailyNews Take: If we had to guess, the App Store usage is north of 90%. An informal snap survey of friends and family we’ve conducted, too, shows the numbers make sense, too: many are willing to risk it by foregoing Apple Care for iPhone, about 1/3rd watch some Apple TV, listening to Podcasts is about the same, a bit more for Apple Music, and Apple News just doesn’t seem to resonate for whatever reason.

  1. I’ve only subscribed to Apple News as part of a promo to unlock certain stories in the Stocks app. It’s annoying because you have to click through several buttons to get the story to open in Safari where you can save it to Pocket for example. I’ve never considered a paid sub. These days with our lives awash in media of all kinds, if some article is behind a paywall that I can’t get around with reader view I skip it.

  2. I place this one as slightly more “default” than Google search and should Google lose their case, iCloud may be next on the list for being the subject of a future legal inquiry.
