Elon Musk said he would ban Apple devices from his companies’ networks if OpenAI’s artificial intelligence software is integrated at the operating system level, calling the new features a security risk.

Nick Turner for Bloomberg News:

Musk co-founded OpenAI but had a falling-out with the San Francisco-based startup. He has voiced concerns about the safety implications of speedy development of generative AI technology, but he’s also working on his own competitor to ChatGPT.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies,” Musk wrote on X, the social network that he owns. “That is an unacceptable security violation.”

Turner continues:

Musk runs Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. He also has his own AI startup, called xAI, with a chatbot named Grok.

“Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage,” he added, referring to a device that blocks electromagnetic fields.

MacDailyNews Take: This is classic FUD and sour grapes from a new AI rival who was likely scorned by Apple in favor of market leader OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The key sentences in this report are:

“Musk co-founded OpenAI but had a falling-out with the San Francisco-based startup… He also has his own AI startup, called xAI, with a chatbot named Grok.”

  1. Jobs always strove for complete control of the hardware and software in order to control the end user experience. If Elon is correct, Apple just kissed goodbye to everything Jobs was trying to accomplish.

    1. Apple didn’t write the first OS for the iPod either. They needed to get the iPod out the door, so they modified a third-party base code. And that was under Jobs.

  2. Musk is probably paying Tim Cook back for Apple’s trashing of Twitter/X after Musk purchased it. Cook deserves shaming for all he has done to censor conservatives and censor speech. Cook is an evil person.

      1. Conservatives want small, limited government. The left wants large authoritarian governments such as communism and socialism. Fascism was always a left movement but they are trying to rewrite history. The Italian fascists were a left workers movement, Soviet communism, China communist party, etc.

        1. Hmm, what they also want is to claw back the gains made by women, minorities and those in the LGBTQ community as well as continuing to convince everyday Americans that socialised health care is a bad thing.

What the country needs are leaders from the center left and center right to come together and defeat the extremists on both sides.

      2. You’re confusing that with liberal, which is just another word for fascist!

Ronald Reagan said, “If fascism ever comes to America, it will come in the name of liberalism.”

      3. Liberal defining things involves hubris, as to them, a differing opinion “necessitates” a besmirching of the messenger. Also, many say of the liberal, watch what they say as darts thrown depict–as a cover–what they are currently doing/thinking in real time.

Saul Alinsky deemed it wise, at least.

        1. Communism is a form of institutionalized narcissism, with the main proponents usually being miserable people, a sad and toxic mix of being desperate for validation and displacing their internalized angst on others. I’d vote for giving them their own state/country to live out their ‘uptopia’ (lol), but they wouldn’t go for it. They feed off judging others and making people as miserable as they are.

  3. While the functionality may be built-in, that doesn’t mean that companies will not be able to shut it off. I’m sure JAMF and other Operation Management software will have a kill switch option available. Everyone just needs to settle down. This has just been introduced and Apple has everyone else’s mistakes to avoid. I’m sure it will all work out in the end.

  4. forget the Elon / Apple fight. Yesterday’s WWDC was boring; incremental updates nothing really great. The whole presentation has turned into a fake creep show robotic presentation. But maybe I’m wrong, the event felt like the people next gen meta human avatars or Hollywood digital doubles. Apple really needs to get back to a live event and not a prerecorded playback. Apple is so safe; they are scared to host a live event with real people. I would love to see the outtakes. And enough with the fpv flying transitions between locations on Apple campus. Who thought Tim standing on a roof next to solar panels was a good idea. It’s just climate warrior virtue signaling. Next year he will give his talk inside a recycle trash bin.

  5. I love how Elon acts like he doesn’t have a dog in the fight – and it’s losing. Ha! xAI is behind the competition right now, Elon knows it, and he’s being left out in the cold.

I guess this means Elon won’t be bringing his iPhone to work anymore due to his own policies. Or Mac… Or iPad… Ha! Oh, rules for thee, not for me (but of course)…
