watchOS 11 expected to enable blood pressure management; new Apple Watch required

The Blood Oxygen sensor on the back crystal of Apple Watch

watchOS 11 will reportedly enable blood pressure management, but a new, as-yet-unannounced Apple Watch will be required for users who desire hypertension detection, according to Bloomberg News‘ Mark Gurman.

Mark Gurman for Bloomberg:

The Health app is getting some upgrades, including improved blood pressure data management — in preparation for future Apple Watches to have hypertension detection.

There also will be support for a new hearing test feature on Apple’s AirPods. The earbuds are getting a new hearing-aid feature as well, but this may not be announced until later this year.

The Health app, meanwhile, will better tailor data, such as cycle tracking, if a person is pregnant.

MacDailyNews Take: This feature alone will fuel a very strong Apple Watch upgrade cycle as well as prompting sales to millions of users who will be new to Apple Watch!

According to the CDC, Nearly half of adults in America have hypertension (119.9 million). About 1 in 4 adults with hypertension have their hypertension under control (27.0 million). All adults with hypertension are recommended by a clinician to undergo lifestyle modifications. This is the only treatment recommendation for 1 in 5 adults (25.0 million).

  1. I think I have a Watch 7, but would buy a new one for BP monitoring. I’m on meds, but not so sure I should be. Anyway, meds or no, the ability to monitor BP is something I’d upgrade for.

  2. This would be great, but the loss of the blood monitoring (SpO2) is a big loss if they get it back on the new watch. As a medical professional myself, these two are linked in that they are tied to common conditions. I can see users who say have asthma, COPD or heart failure having a current watch that has the SpO2 monitoring have to choose to keep what they have to monitor that OR get a new watch and lose that function to gain the new BP monitoring….or wear two watches…none of the 3 choices is a good one from a health perspective. Apple needs to address this in an announcement with the new watch (when it comes) as well.
