Netflix to end support for 2nd and 3rd gen. Apple TV on July 31st

In an email to some subscribers, Netflix announced that it will no longer support second-generation and third-generation Apple TV models as of July 31, 2024.

Tim Hardwick for MacRumors:

Netflix said that the decision made to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience” by focusing on devices that can support the latest features and updates.

The second-generation ‌Apple TV‌ was the first of its kind to feature a black body and an aluminum Apple Remote, an updated look compared to the silver and white ‌Apple TV‌ that was originally released in 2007. The unit was powered by an A4 chip, and offered up to 720p resolution output.

Apple sold the second-generation ‌Apple TV‌ from 2010 until 2012, which is when the company released the third-generation ‌Apple TV‌ with an A5 chip and support for 1080p content.

Both models run on an early variant of iOS that precedes tvOS and lacks an App Store.

  1. I have a 1st gen 4k. I’d love to buy a new upgraded unit. But why? I want to. But there’s so little reason I can’t even create enough delusion to justify it in my biased mind. And that says a lot about the Apple TV.

The original Apple TV shipped in Mar 2007. There have been 7 models. About 17 years. And they only sold 25 million of them. Pathetic. Explains why Apple has had to make Apple TV Apps for everyone else’s TV and streaming boxes to sell ( or give away) Apple TV+.

The quality of hardware is for the most part is fantastic. The “newer” remote is a poor remote at best. Especially considering the time Apple has had to do almost nothing to improve it. HDMI out only, is terrible. At least give us an optical out. Cost cutting at its worst. Forcing you to use your AVR or their mediocre AirPods, or course. Yes, I said mediocre. Any audiophile will tell you that.

The Apple TV App started pretty good with TONS of potential. But instead of being an unbiased aggregate of content from multiple platforms. It is now used primarily to sell Apple TV+ content. ENDLESSLY. CONSTANTLY. EVERYWHERE.

Orphaned. Apple seems like they haven’t cared for many years. I’m not sure if it’s even worth continuing the platform.

    1. Apple dropped the ball when it comes to games for the Apple TV. This should be obvious even to those who aren’t gamers. Nowadays, games are a key driver and a major catalyst for sales. The games for the Apple TV are mediocre.
