40% of iPad users use tablet for '3 years or more'

CIRP’s latest data shows that a whopping 40% of iPad users keep their tablet for “3 years or more.” That’s up from 36% in 2023 and 28% from 2022.

Michael Potuck for 9to5mac:

The group that’s kept their iPad for 2-3 years increased to 25%, up 2% from 2023 and 2022.

And those keeping an iPad for 1-2 years or less than 1 year dropped to 25% and 10%, respectively.

CIRP highlights that with tablets, users usually keep using them until they break, the battery dies, or they run out of storage.

One thing to keep in mind, this study was finished before the 2024 iPads launched. So we’ll have to keep an eye out for the next CIRP data to see if the new iPads were able to tempt customers to upgrade earlier than this March 2023-2024 data shows.

  1. “Whopping” three or more years.

    Is it really that shocking?

Things must be getting tough at 9to5 these days.
I used to go to Apple news sites daily. Now barely do at all. Not much changes.

  2. Well-deserved criticism aside, iPads have had the best longevity of all Apple devices for me. Besides the iPad 3, which I sold within a year, I used my iPad Mini (bought used) for 5 years, my iPad Mini 4 (bought at deep discount) still serves as Logi Circle 2 camera monitor after 6 years, and I’m typing this on my 2020 iPad Pro (bought at moderate discount). The lesson with iPad for me is to not buy the latest model, but either used or on sale.

This is especially true now when the new models and their exclusive peripherals are all full price today. Aside from external screen mirroring (a very questionable feature) a 2018 iPad Pro is going to do practically everything that a 2024 iPad Pro can.

  3. As an aside…

My new iPad Pro landed today. Transferring the contents from its four-year-old predecessor was a snap.

Initial impressions: The 13-inch model is ridiculously thin and light. The screen is easily the best I’ve seen on a portable device of this size. Apple packaging is the industry standard.

Lots more things to do and compatibilities to test. Looking forward to stressing the M4 processor.
