Apple’s Eddy Cue: Next the government will want to turn on your iPhone’s camera or microphone

An “Apple exec wonders: ‘Where are you going to stop?'” Hilary Brueck reports for Fortune. “Let the FBI in through the backdoor and soon they’ll be peeking through the windows and tapping into the microphones.'”

“That was the argument Apple head of online services Eddy Cue put forth on Univision on Wednesday, as he laid into the FBI for pushing the company to help uncover encrypted information on the San Bernardino shooter’s phone,” Brueck reports. “Cue says if the FBI is successful in this case, there’s no telling what it might try to do next: ‘Some day they will want to turn on a camera or the microphone,” Cue said. “That should not happen in this country.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Of course, the government would attempt to push the envelope. Don’t give ’em and inch, lest they take a mile.

  1. Hey security leak
You will more like you know what you are talking about if you don’t include nonsense. The FBI can’t indict, only recommend. Indictment requires the DOJ and with Obama’s AG Loretta Lynch in charge of covering up you can bet the ranch it will never happen.

  2. Eddy Cue is quoting from Apple’s Motion To Vacate . This isn’t an original thought.

Finally, given the government’s boundless interpretation of the All Writs Act, it is hard to conceive of any limits on the orders the government could obtain in the future. For example, if Apple can be forced to write code in this case to bypass security features and create new accessibility, what is to stop the government from demanding that Apple write code to turn on the microphone in aid of government surveillance, activate the video camera, surreptitiously record conversations, or turn on location services to track the phone’s user? Nothing.
