Analyst: Samsung Galaxy S6 likely to win back iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users

“In recent years, handset manufacturers have been focusing on software and services as the key ways to differentiate their devices,” James Henderson reports for Computerworld. “For Ronan de Renesse, Lead Analyst, Consumer Technology, Ovum, this remains a central aspect of the consumer experience, but product launches from Samsung, LG, and HTC at Mobile World Congress 2015 have shown a refocus on design and specifications.”

“‘With the S6 and S6 Edge, Samsung is directly attempting to win back iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users – and looks likely to succeed,’ Renesse says,” Henderson reports. “‘However, its sales will be affected by the fact that Apple captured most of the high-end market in 2014; Samsung may have to wait for those users to upgrade, hindering its 2015 prospects.'”

MacDailyNews Take: So, you see, “with the S6 and S6 Edge,” Samsung is “likely to succeed” at “directly attempting to win back iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users,” but “Samsung may have to wait for those users to upgrade, hindering its 2015 prospects.”

Don’t you get it? Whatsamatta, you don’t understand Doublespeak?

Translation: Samsung Galaxy S6 won’t win back iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users.

    1. I think what should be asked of these paid Samsung journalists is not only “how” Samsung will win back these iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users but “why” would anyone go from an aspirational brand to a generic brand.

It would also be interesting to ask them what phone they are using as their personal phones, not work phones. I would presume “most” of them use the iPhone.

    2. And part of this ridiculous scenario has Apple standing still and not improving their own products while they wait for the next upgrade cycle. By that time, Apple will have left Slamdung in the dust for good, and all the while collecting 89%+ of the revenue dollars.

  1. I love this article, it’s such complete BS you just have to laugh. Nothing is really mentioned in the article that states why anyone would move from an iPhone 6/6+ to the S6. A quad HD screen is the only thing and it only looks better on a spec sheet.

  2. Samsung will lose more customers. iPhone users never go back to Android once they’ve switched.
Wishful thinking but not gonna happen. Don’t want an imitation when I have the real thing.

  3. Quesrion: Has SamDungie revealed pricing yet?

Second Quesrion: Is there any improvement in software?

Third Quesrion: Is the battery and memory still upgradeable – Those were selling features of previous models – Can the user still upgrade or replace after purchase?

  4. and what is Apple going to do? Not release a new phone in time for iPhone 6Plus users to upgrade to in 2016? Aka iPhone 6S or iPhone 7. How can this guy call himself a Lead Analyst of Consumer Technology?

  5. It’s funny how Samsung is going to “win back” customers when they drop the things that made them so great.

Removable battery. That one was stupid when you looked at the price of the model specific battery and charger price. It would be half the price just to get a charging device that can charge any USB device. However a lot of Samsung lovers thought is was great.

Micro SD storage. This sounds good until one realizes that it is not as accessible as built in storage. A cheap workaround. One that is great for a techie but not the average user.

Waterproof. That was cool. However it was one model, Samsung tried to make it seam it was on all their phones. I remember all the “drop test” videos that showed Samsung quickly dying in water and not the iPhone.

Samsung removing their bloatware is a positive. That shows how bad it must have been.

The two things the writer left out was the new Pay to take on Apple Pay. This may be the one thing that Samsung has over other Android phones. The new Loop feature for non NFC POS systems sounds great. If it is anything like the video of people trying to use it than it be ridaculed. It also shows how bad Google Wallet is. Samsung saying how better their new fingerprint scanner is only shows how big of a joke it was. It was tech HTC dropped after one model. It may be easier to use, but will it be stored on CPU, regular memory or online.

The best part of his post was the “maturing” high in smartphones. If it was “maturing” than Samsung would not be so desperate to get it.

  6. Perhaps they’re hoping to catch those that are still considering an upgrade to iPhone 6/6 plus or those that are having problems with them for one reason or another. Upgrade cycle rarely lasts for only a month or two.. 😛

    1. AND Then This Happened, SamTards. 😛

Ars readers react: Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 might be a step backward
We praised it in our hands-on, but readers disagree—a lot—with Samsung’s design.

…The new Galaxy flagship is missing a pair of features that have in the past proved pretty popular with Android’s more technical users: the S6 has no removable battery and no MicroSD card slot. . . .

“No expandable storage and no removable battery means they just lost a customer,” wrote Ars commenter CrookedKnight. “Hilariously, the all-glass design makes it that much more fragile, meaning a case is that much more of a necessity,” he continued, “meaning even if I bought one I’d never see or touch the ‘premium components.'”

IOW: Samsung copied Apple yet-again, but this time some users wish they hadn’t. Fascinating.

    2. To give the benefit of the doubt.. I don’t think Apple would have enforced encrypting by default either if the iPhone model only supported encryption via SW.. Some problems come with not owning both the HW and SW stacks.

      1. And yet, now Google is saying that default encryption will really really really be the case in the next version of Android! – Perhaps they’re mandating hardware support in the next generation of devices. The whole mess points out how little Google controls the Android platform. You get what you get, depending upon what vendor your purchase. As fragmandroid indicates, there is NO ONE ANDROID. 😛

        1. I can agree with that.. it may be that for the next version of Google Android there will be a requirement for the device to have HW encryption capabilities or Google will not license Google Android for that device and the OEMs will have to find an alternative Android fork to use.. Maybe Cyanogen. 😛 As pointed out by lots of articles already, Google itself has very little control over non-Google Android so kinda old news there.

  7. The people who do switch back to Samsung junk after having an iPhone are drug addict junkies who can’t hold onto nice things because they sell the shit for dope and would rather have a Samsung piece of shit than pre-iPhone Jurassic phone.

  8. The last few generations of HTC smartphones are a good test of the the author’s theory.

HTC’s recent phones have been beautifully designed, and unlike samsungs S6, are more than simple copies of iPhone design themes. Reviewers have broadly praised their designs. Over the last few years, have buyers flocked to HTC over Samsung or Apple?

In a word: No. HTC is losing money and has about 2% market share.

    Case closed.

  9. I love the fact that Samsung is now having to “chase” Apple and their customers rather than leading them to an alternative. It’s a huge difference in terms of sales and marketing.

E.g. if you’re already iPhone 6 or 6 Plus owner where’s the incentive? and If you’re contemplating a smartphone purchase, why would you settle for an inferior product for very little savings.

The only way these guys will push phones again will be through carrier deals and incentives (e.g. 2-for-1 specials, etc.).

    Game over!

  10. What’s really funny is how will they sell the S6s if they’re still showing tv commercials for the S5 plastic water resistance pos. I saw the ad this evening. It did make the phone look good pouring water all over it. But nothing they make will convince my to switch from an iPhone. I’m still with the 5S (love the camera) but upgrading this fall.

    1. You left off the /s, or the ;^)
Of course, you might be serious, in which case that noise you hear is that of small children pointing at you in the street and laughing.

  11. Well – just spent $850 for my iPhone 6 Plus along with $850 for my wife’s iPhone 6 Plus and I’m going to switch??? I don’t think so! Already tried the Android environment – didn’t sit well having to wait months for the Android updates.
