“Apple Inc will build a large research and development facility in Japan, Prime Minister Abe Shinzo said on Tuesday, local media reported,” Teppei Kasai reports for The Associated Press.
Kasai reports, “‘Apple has decided it undertake cutting-edge R&D in Japan,’ Jiji news service quoted Abe as saying in a campaign speech outside of Tokyo ahead of a general election on Sunday. ‘It will be formally announced soon.'”

America loves Samsung products too much. j/k! But seriously, though… Japan is an important market for Apple and the Japanese LOVE Apple.
Apple builds a huge office in USA. But it is not possible to do all of the research in one country. Apple already has R&D centres in Ireland, Israel, France; Japan is to come, as well as couple more countries.
Apple already has a major R&D center in America. Building one in Japan makes it possible to hire engineers who aren’t willing to make the move.

Absolutely you have to be diverse with R&D to link into the qualities and skills of the region and a presense in Asia is surely vital considering the importance of the region in the future.
The R&D center will put some of Apple’s overseas cash to work for Apple.
