iOS 8 crash rate 78 percent higher than iOS 7

“If you’re looking for stability, then iOS 8 might not be the direction you want to be going in,” Adrian Kingsley-Hughes reports for ZDNet. “According to mobile application performance management company Crittercism, Apple’s latest iOS 8 release is seeing crash rates which are 78 percent higher than those seen on iOS 7.”

“Crashes will be a result of both bugs in iOS 8 and buggy apps, and so over time as iOS and app updates are released, this figure should do down,” Kingsley-Hughes reports. “It’s possible too that older handsets are running old apps that either haven’t been updated, either because the user hasn’t applied the update or because the app has been abandoned by the developer and won’t see any further updates.”

MacDailyNews Take: iOS 7 is a year old and is on its ninth version, so, of course, the OS and third-party apps running on it will be more stable. Notwithstanding today’s iOS 8.0.1 fiasco, we expect Apple to get their act together starting with iOS 8.0.2 and quickly improve iOS 8 stability.

A note about our app: We are working on some new things under the hood in addition to iOS 8 compatibility. Thank you for your patience while we work to improve the stability of our app for iOS 8. More info: The MacDailyNews app will be updated for iOS 8 ASAP

        1. I believe that “Big Dummy” is old enough to be educated about the birds and the bees, since he found the thoughts that led to the asterisks button on his keyboard,

by the way, does someone, ANYONE, want to chime in on what the Fsck “Big Dummy” means by f**k while they are at it?

    1. The MDN app consistently freezes immediately upon opening an article on my 4S. A few seconds later the window just closes. However, the app remains open in the background. This started after I installed 8.0. Fortunately, I had yet to download 8.0.1.

      1. Not to mention:

What is “It” at the beginning of the sentence?

        And, it is what?

Could be anything, even if you know he is referring to the MDN app. The picture is pretty on the MDN app. The sound is terrible on the MDN app. Zero context = zero meaning.

Might be intended to mean that the iOS crash rate is 78% on the MDN app. But that would be wrong, as even I know it is 100%. And I don’t even use the app! I access on a browser all the time, and I know the MDN app doesn’t work at all on iOS8.

  1. For my money, Early Adopter = Gamma Tester!

moral: Be patient: don’t install version x.0 of anything! Let those E.A.’s sort the bugs out for you, while you wait for a more stable later version.

    1. I’d agree, but if only Apple took its beta testing program more seriously. Why not invite Yosemite testers to also test iOS 8? Why just have an app for reporting problems and not a forum? iOS 7 was a nightmare until 7.1.1 and Mavericks felt like a beta until two versions ago.

Yearly OS updates are a mistake. An OS should be released when it’s ready, not on a schedule.

  2. Yeah, they’ll fix it but the damage is done. Amazing that it takes seemingly forever from announcement to launch and then, this happens. Another symptom of ordinary. Trash me if you wish but, it is what it is.

  3. iOS 8.0 week one Vs. iOS 7.0 week one.

I have *never* had as many issues with a mobile OS as bad as I had with iOS 7. until the patch Apple released a few days after iOS 7 launched.. my iPhone was horrible.

iOS 8 on the other hand, as I stated in another article here:
    1. My mother’s Gold iPhone 6 was sluggish during setup for about 5 seconds while I was in settings. (has not happened since)
    2. after my iPhone 6 was finally activated (thanks AT&T online activation…) I was unable to receive pictures/videos via text/iMessage at all.
**Disclaimer** After finding out how to cure the problem, I found that is was an old issue with iMessage, that somehow reared it’s ugly ass head in iOS 8.

No other problems/issues that I have noticed. Except certain apps are unusable due to iOS 8 incompatibilities… *ahem*

  4. I installed iOS 8.0.1 on 3 devices today and have not had any issues at all. We all know how dumb some consumers are and they never do things right. Hence the label on hot coffee and other products with warnings that anyone with common sense should know not to do with said product without having to be told. But with all the lawyers in this country we can’t avoid it.

    1. You downloaded 8.0.1 during the few hours it was available, but you don’t consider yourself an early adopter?

It works for you, and that’s great. There are hundreds of other people that it doesn’t work for. I suppose they don’t count as long as you’re all right. You suggest that it’s somehow their fault. Or are you suggesting—as several posters on MDN suggested earlier today—that they are all lying Samscum flunkies?

My guess is that the 8.0.1 problem, like the unusually high crash rate, is the result of non-updated apps on some phones (but not others) that are interacting with the OS, the phone network, or each other in unpredictable ways. There is no way to test every iPhone model with every possible combination of apps. Bad news for the consumer, but it is hardly the users’ fault.

As a former prosecutor, I’ll venture a guess that if you lost a member of your family because their expensive phone didn’t work, you would be looking for a lawyer to sue somebody.

  5. I have had few problems with installing and using iOS 8 on my devices. The ones I have had were my fault or impatience because of the tremendous demands on Apple servers caused by record numbers of adopters over a short time. Everything but apps which have not upgraded for the new OS is working fine now.

  6. I installed 8.0 on my iPhone 4s and have updated all apps which can be updated so far. Most are performing well, but MDN app is by far the WORST offender. It crashes literally every time I try to read an article. It is worse than useless until updated.

By the way… the MDN app was rock solid until recently when they defaulted to having articles open automatically when you launch from a notification. It takes way longer to open and crashes frequently while trying to load the articles. Please just take us to the home page on launch no matter what … that was SO much more stable. Most times I just want to close the article and get to the home page list anyway, but it crashes before I can do that and takes forever to respond before crashing. I love MDN, but hate what you have done with the mobile app recently.

  7. I have IOS 8 running on 5 devices (2 iPhones 5s and 3 iPads) along with Yosemite Beta on my MacBook Air. Totaly awesome on all fronts. Sure a glitch here and there but think of what’s going on here. Total integration, total acces to everything. The entire system is operating as one. Say what you want…nothing from any other vendor even comes close.

  8. No crashes yet on my 5s, but the initial install did not go smoothly. Songs, playlists and music videos were vanishing and a sync just refused to work. A restore as new followed by a restore from a known good backup brought everything back to normal. No problems with the iPad 3 at all.

  9. iPhone 6 has had no problems. iPad Air had a lockup on installed apps fixed by turning the network on.

I’m guessing iOS 8 phones home as the OS and apps had been used for days after the update. I was waiting in a Doctor’s office and had the WiFi turned off. As soon as I enabled the network the apps that refused to open launched fine.

Maybe Apple is taking a page from Google. Hope not.

        1. For the uninformed……

“even after the latest iOS 8 update”
MEANING 8.0.1 the Update Apple PULLED cause it was fucking up iPhones.

          Again, I said..
“As has been reported, 6 and 6 plus are affected. no other models were.”

READ what Bono said…. he UPDATED An iPhone 5S……

Try and stay up to date.

        2. Ok dipshit…. I’M NOT QUOTING THE ARTICLE
IGNORE THE FUCKING CHART…… Cause I wasn’t commenting on it.

          ONLY what Bono said.
“iPhone 5s -no problem even after the latest iOS 8 update.”

EVEN AFTER THE LATEST iOS 8 UPDATE….. there has ONLY BEEN ONE UPDATE FOR iOS 8…… 8.0.1

          “Where has it been reported?”

READ all the articles… they all mention 6 and 6 plus being affected. those that did the 8.0.1 update on 5s and below… did not have problems.

          http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-releases-ios-8-0-1-a-week-after-ios-8-launch/
“We have a workaround for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1.”

          Oh no… a direct comment FROM APPLE…….
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users……………………….. WHERE DOES IT MENTION 5S users??????????????????????

At least *try* to not show your total ignorance.

  10. Only installed iOS 8 on my mini Retina and it does crash with the Opera Coast browser a lot. My 64 5S is full so can’t upgrade to 8. Glad cause MDN app works great with 7.1.2. And I have a 6 Plus on order for mid October delivery. Not gonna put 8 on iPad Air. Too buggy to risk it. Mini Retina not nearly as reliable as it was in 7.1.2. Bummer. Seems sluggish too.
