New leaks show off Apple’s iPhone 6’s curved edged display

“Photos of physical mockups and various parts for the upcoming iPhone 6 have been leaking out an almost weekly basis over the course of the past several weeks,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“However, actual parts for the display cover for the larger phone have yet to leak out,” Gurman reports. “Sonny Dickson sent us several photos of purported display glass covers in both black and white variations for the 4.7-inch iPhone. Apple is also working on an even larger 5.5-inch ‘phablet’ model, but we do not have photos of the screen covers for that model.”

Gurman reports, “A new hole appears to the left of the ear speaker, but it is unclear if this is a re-located FaceTime front camera or a proximity sensor… The edges also appear to be slightly curved.”

      1. Actually, who cares? That was my point. Apple seems to be obsessed with making the device thinner and thinner. I really don’t think most people care that much. What people care about is how well it works and what they can do with it. And will it finally have a larger screen. That’s what people really care about.

        1. Sorry, that was somewhat my intention too. The rumor mill loves to talk up the farfetched improvements to the latest iPhone, and soon you have rumors of curved glass displays, but now they tone it down as “curved edged” displays. But tapered is a much more suitable word. (And yes, the edge of the glass is not something to get too excited about).

    1. I do too. But in the opposite way.
I’d rather have a *thicker* iPhone with a substantially longer battery life. I really don’t care if they shave another mm off the thickness. That doesn’t make the phone better in any way. OTOH, adding a mm and a couple hours battery life would be incredible.

I recently started work in a building that doesn’t allow camera phones. Not wanting to disable the cameras on my 5s, I dug up an old 4s I had, disabled the cameras on that, reactivated the phone, and forwarded my calls to the 4s while in this building. I was totally blown away by the battery life on my ancient (what, three years old at this point) iPhone 4s. Two days later I still haven’t charged it. In the meantime, my 5s battery lasts about 0.75 days if I’m actually using it (and I’m not one of these people who are constantly texting people; about the only time I stay on the phone is during meals or in lines to occupy the time (get caught up on news, e.g., MDN).

I’d love the thickness of the 4s in a new iPhone if it meant I could get double the battery life.

      1. That option is available to you.
There Many iphone cases out there with backup battery packs… They will make your iPhone both thicker and double battery life !

  1. I’m no expert, but I know that crafting curved glass would substantially increase the cost of building any phone. I doubt that Apple would make that kind of tradeoff just to slightly curve the phone edges.
