“Accord to a recent report coming from the Taiwanese media (or Taiwan’s Commercial Times to be exact), Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone 6 (which has been referred to as the ‘iPhone Air’) might not be ready for the masses by the end of 2014,” G4Games reports. “Supposedly, Apple’s biggest challenge is to create a very thin device, and the main issue is that the battery cell suppliers are currently unable to meet the Cupertino giant’s demands.”
“In general, smartphone batteries have a thickness of roughly 2.8 / 2.9 millimeters, but in Apple’s vision, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 must have a slick profile which can only be achieved by fitting a battery that measures only 2 mm or less,” G4Games reports. “As far as we know, the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 is being internally referred to as iPhone Air, and by ‘internally’ we don’t mean Apple’s employees, but Apple’s suppliers.”
“We should also point out that the ‘iPhone Air’ moniker is not set in stone, and that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 might go on sale under a different name,” G4Games reports. “When it will happen exactly remains to be seen, but this doesn’t look too good for fans of big screens who were considering the possibility of switching to the iOS ecosystem.”

I’d be happy as a clam to put up with an extra millimeter to gain an extra three hours of battery life when I’m traveling.
Seems like this story has a lot of ‘air’.
Yup, a rumored delay about a rumored product.
These delayed rumors from various sources prior to every product whether it be a brand new product, redesigned or refresh always crop up. What is the next story line to follow in the journalist/analyst Apple playbook of reporting.
…or perhaps a loose-lipped supplier admitted that it failed to meet the original Apple schedule, so Apple has had no choice but to delay until its battery supplier is able to overcome the development challenges.
There are WAAAYY too many people here with their paranoid theories that everyone is out to get Apple. Get a grip.
Fanboys. They are all paranoid. It’s the whole world, plus Wall Street, against Apple. Hilarious!
Doesn’t look good because, you know, having waited 6 years for a larger iPhone, people can’t wait another 10 months.
Well, it’s a darn good thing they appear to be making a 4.7″ iPhone to be released this year, then.
Two words… STOCK MANIPULATION
Basically, yes. And to think, I enjoyed the good day AAPL had yesterday after getting pounded the last couple weeks.
Wait till AH on Wednesday. Good news or bad, the stock will take a pounding! AAPL is a glutton for punishment for no good reason.
Does anyone else think that this is just the global “tech media” trying to backtrack on rumors of the nonexistent 5.5″ device because there’ve been no signs of it in the supply chain, unlike the presumed 4.7″ model?
Rumour: Apple delays its ghetto iPhones because it is rumoured that Samsung is making 5.5″ and 4.7″ Galaxy phones to ‘compete’ with Apple. Apple is rumoured to be moving to 5.6″ and 4.8″ models as a ‘new’ innovation.
This just in: Samsung is rumoured to be making 5.7″ and 4.9″ Galaxy phones to show how innovative they are.
Samsung is one of those battery suppliers, according to the article. Samsung isn’t doing well with its latest offering. Samsung thinks people are waiting to see the iPhone 6. So Samsung creates a rumor that the iPhone 6 will be delayed a year. Typical.
Ah, now I get it. It is Samsung all along. I wouldn’t doubt it if they have parts made for their own phones and spread rumours about their troubles but claim that they are iPhones.
Lets put it this way. Apple is always struggling to meet demand for their flagship 4″ phone, I say it makes sense to release early next year as any supply issues for the 4.7 have been ironed out.
A release for the 5.5 makes more sense then, and will also take the air out Samsung’s jumbo phone release which would also be released at the same time.
I think the 5.5 timing is better for early next year.
Or something.
Bald gehts bude nöme de mömer nöme diskutiere.
How can something that hasn’t even been announced be delayed? Idiots.
Well I think it is clear that the delay is due to the problems with hot air circulation caused by poor BS insulation at the battery farm.
What a noxious buffet of shit.
doesn’t this story appear every year about the battery or display like clockwork?
Yes, because these rumors are manufactured by Samsung to over come the Osborne effect each pending new Apple product causes.
Don’t believe it.
Apple knows better than to stiffle the first model of a product, so I think it sounds fishy.
And here is the out.
All the rumors about bigger screens, and to not be wrong we now have the rumor about the delay. This way when it does not deliver, it’s because apple delayed it not because it was a wish list guess by a fandroid user.
Bigger is not necessarily better. We had the iPad and it was too big so we got the iPad mini. When everyone is pushing bigger apple goes smaller.
What basis does anyone have to believe apple would go bigger on the screen other than because android has.
