Apple rumored to unleash new 12-inch MacBook

“A forum post on Chinese language site Weiphone.com offers up tantalizing details on Apple’s next round of MacBooks,” Peter Cohen reports for iMore. “The comments are attributed to an author with a credible track record of breaking leaks and photos for MacBook laptops in the past, according to MacRumors.com.”

“A new 12-inch MacBook is in the works, according to the poster. The computer eschews fans and comes with a new trackpad design that doesn’t include a mechanical button, like the trackpad on current MacBook models,” Cohen reports. “Such a design might enable Apple to built an even slimmer system than it does already, or perhaps use the extra space to cram even more battery capacity inside.”

Cohen reports, “Months ago analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple’s going to build out the Retina MacBook Pro line with a 12-inch model, too.”

  1. I’m waiting patiently for an iOS update that will address battery problems with my phone. Since update it absolutely horrible! It does not hold a charge the way it used to. Please fix!

    1. Strange, none of our iPhones have this problem. Maybe you shouldn’t have tried to apply the update to your Samdung, Troll. How much are they paying you to post this crap?

        1. @Matt

Let me translate what this idiot Electro is telling you.

The iPhone is a piece of crap. Don’t buy an iPhone if you want a long battery life. Buy a Samsung Galaxy S5 instead. These have all day and beyond battery life which beats the iPhone hands down.

I repeat, the iPhone is a piece of crap. Buy a Samsung Galaxy S5, which is better than an iPhone. That is what Electro is telling you.

        2. Independent tests show the Samsung products have a much worse battery life than iPhones but you be the judge. Following recommended practices may not be for you. Keep your Samsung phone and be happy.

      1. Hmmm… have to agree about iPhone battery life. My 5s has significantly poorer performance, compared to my previous and much-loved 4s.

It’s not a change-it-now issue mind, but I do notice the hit, and to be on the safe side, often give it a feed at teatime.

Not surprisingly, it’s especially noticeable when using apps like Snapseed, Photoshop, both of which suck the power away.

Great camera though – did a stills/video shoot on Saturday and the iP5s results were as good or better than the JVC pro-cam we used for tripod shots.

      1. The battery drain was not minor. 10-16 hours down to 4 hours for me. But there is a workaround. Found it before the articles and posted my workaround here.

But it does mean no location services enabled for Apples passbook and app store.

    2. My wife’s 4S is having problems suddenly running out of battery about three hours before normal. My iPad mini Retina is having problems as well. I charge the iPad at night and in the morning the battery indicator immediately shows 99 or 98 %. There is a problem and it is real.

    3. I read that there is a small percentage of iPhone users experiencing battery drain after the recent update. I think it was on an Apple support forum. The solution they suggested was to do a complete backup of your iPhone using iTunes, then Restore the iPhone, which will erase your iPhone, install a fresh copy of iOS, then restore your settings from the backup.

Apple is probably working on an easier solution, that will be in a future update. But if you can’t wait, I suggest doing the complete backup and restore.

Personally, my iPhone seems about the same battery-wise after the last update.

  2. 12inch iPad and now a 12″ Air……no fan? Wondering if this is the mix up and its going to be running iOS and is the 12inch iPad/Air or something? I hope its not OS X running on ARM processor. Hopefully still Intel!

    1. No, there won’t be any OS X on ARM. Have no fear. We’ve killed that topic a few times over around here.

So maybe Apple sees something in an in-betweeny laptop? Bigger than an iPad. Smaller than a MacBook. Fits in a breadbox. 😉

        1. I got a free Chromebook 2 months ago. (With fibre broadband subscription). I played with it fir a few hours. Haven’t opened it back up since.

  3. I recall when Apple used to make a PowerBook of similar size. A lot of Japanese Mac users loved them and were upset when they were discontinued. I personally have no use for them, but teeny laptops have their niche. Whether they’re profitable is another matter.

    1. Had one. It was great at the time, but went to 13″ screens when Apple switched to Intel processors in 2006. Came across one of them recently. Seems positively dinky. Can’t see why Apple would take a step back after eight years.

      1. I’m seeing teeny net books out in the field as lightweight sources of information and utilities. The screen is weeny, but if you have an adequate version of Windows installed (not the default crap version the sellers offer), you can do work on it. It’s certainly more powerful for anything geek oriented than the tablets. I see tablets as useful for less geek oriented work.

        1. Pretty fancy field you’ve got there. Out in my field, I see mostly dirt. But I do find that I am out, standing in the field, usually walking the dog.

But, it is a field without walls, so who needs windows, anyway?

        2. That was ‘the’ field, where people are working with techy stuff. ‘My’ field is kind of small, but is a nice gathering place for the neighbors. Our first neighborhood brunch is May 3rd. I’ll have my hammock up by then. Some scum stole one of our picnic tables and a whopping tree branch smashed our tarp gazebo. But the neighbors will pitch in to replace them. I’ll soon be growing mint and basil out there. We also have a lot of ferns and roses. It’s wonderful in the summer. 😀

  4. That’s patent No.8,633,916
    Filed Dec.2009
    Issued Jan.2014

a patent for a touch pad that removes the traditional “clickable” integrated button, replacing it with four or more force sensors and an actuator to provide tactile feedback.

  5. This is the patent they filed on 2009 and got issued just this Jan 2014.

  6. Apple fanboys are complete idiots, you can be sure of that. Instead of asking Apple to put in a larger battery or put out a better iOS 7, they recommend that you switch off your iPhone to conserve battery life. You might as well buy a dumb phone if you’re going to carry around a switched off iPhone in your pocket.

Total dumbasses, even stupider than Samsung fanboys.

  7. Try using your iPhone next time instead of letting it sit in your desk drawer. It’s like saying you have no problems with your Tesla Model S battery life because it spends 99% of the time in the garage.

I can guarantee you that if you use your iPhone 5S even moderately as your daily driver, you will face battery life problems. Try using the phone as a smartphone with all services turned on for a change instead of treating it like a dumb phone.

    1. Why all the disdain towards others for using a product you obviously don’t like nor apparently use? Seems like wasted energy to me, not to mention it gums up the boards here with useless drivel.

It’s like saying – “You live in Boston? Boston is terrible. You shouldn’t live there.” Why do you think that anyone living there would give a flying f*$# what you think?

  8. This will be interesting if it’s true. I’m wondering when Apple will start shipping more laptops that use a 16×9 display. The only one that they currently make is the 11 inch MacBook Air. iMacs and their displays, starting with the 27 inch display have been 16×9 for almost 5 years.

  9. No fan sounds a likely next step. The fan my 2012 MBA hardly ever kicks in and the casing is never uncomfortably hot. (Mind, I don’t do games and rarely edit movies.)
