Apple pulls Apple TV update amid bricking complaints

“After Apple TV 6.0 was released on Friday with iTunes Radio and other enhancements, there were many reports of botched updates that required the user to restore their Apple TV,” Scott Buscemi reports for 9to5Mac.

“In some particular instances, Apple TVs have also been permanently bricked or they lost the content on the device during the update,” Musil reports. “Last night, Apple took down the on-device update, and now devices on Apple TV 5.3 are seeing no update available. ”

Musil reports, “Of note, the 6.0 firmware is still available as a download on Apple’s website. ”

  1. Seeing as there appears to be no consistent connection between which ATV’s updated fine, and those that didn’t, before blaming Apple for being sloppy, perhaps it might be better to wait and find out why it has been happening.
Predictably, the usual roaches have crawled out from under the freezer to blame Tim Cook, etc.

    1. Usually this is a good place to test the waters before taking the plunge, but based on the 48 comments here, I don’t discern any pattern. Sigh * spotty data = story of my life 🙂

  2. Our atv3 freaked out and asked to plug it in. Used an old USB to USB micro cable laying around the house from an old cell phone and updated it just fine through the mac. Shit happens. Deal with it everyone. Only took me like 20 minutes to fix.

      1. Half-credit. Even the Android & Windows users get a pass if they’re “early adopters” — installing any software update the day it’s released is tough-guy territory.

Now, if it’s still problematic in 2 weeks, we have a problem.

I haven’t updated to iOS 6 yet.. is it stable?

  3. Updated with no issues on Saturday. Am I one of the lucky ones? Who knows and who cares. Just glad I didn’t get bricked. Now it’s time to listen to Paramore’s iTunes Festival concert performance and then Ellie Goulding.

  4. I did not run into a problem with my AppleTV update. But that is just one more uncorrelated data point, and it is generally difficult to just how widespread or significant a problem actually is when an Apple product is involved. Sometimes a relatively small number of vocal complainers make a mountain out of a molehill. Sometimes a much bigger issue does not get as much publicity. In this particular case, the fact that Apple pulled the AppleTV update indicates that there was a significant issue.

Perhaps MDN should run a survey to get some numbers on how many people ran into a problem versus those who did not? I don’t know how they could account for one person owning multiple devices, though.

  5. I wonder why these updates work for some and not others. Presumably these systems are all the same and should behave identically. When I was writing software I had a chance to inspect some customer hard drives. I was surprised to see some corrupted data and wrote a utility to fix that. Presumably this was due to soft errors in the disk writes. Not unheard of but I would have thought that the error detection circuitry would have flagged this. Might have been something else. With millions of ATVs out there I can imagine unexpected problems cropping up.

  6. Updated here in the UK fine without any problems. Mine is a version 3.

Only dissapointed is iTunes Radio is not available over here.

Friends with Apple TV have upgraded without.
    difficulty.

I have never had a problem with any Apple updates except IOS 7 on my iPhone 4S . After clean install everything was great.

  7. Remote wouldnt work after update …luckily my apple tv is only a week old so they just exchanged it for me at the apple store. Couldnt restore because my computer is running 10.3 I thought the days of worrying about updates were gone but i guess not.

  8. I have an ATV3 early 2013 model, hardwired ethernet to a older, draft N Airport base station. The update downloaded in 30 minutes (11 pm local, 2 am Pacific time). The software verification, software install went fine. The firmware updated and then it never came back online after the reboot, though the ATV indicator was solid white. I powered down the TV set, disconnected ALL connections from the ATV and waited five minutes. Reconnected everything, powered up the TV and ATV3 and all is well.
