Apple’s looming iPhone 5S: What to expect

“The world awaits Apple and the iPhone 5S, reported to come in just 12 days,” Chris Ciaccia writes for The Street. “With tons of rumors and speculation being bandied about, it’s important to separate the truth from the half-truth from the ridiculous.”

“Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone along with a lower-end iPhone Sept. 10 in California, though the exact location has not been unveiled yet,” Ciaccia writes. “Apple’s past release, the iPhone 5, was a drastic change from the iPhone 4 and 4S, as it offered a larger screen, and a thinner body. The iPhone 5 is 4-inches, and most expect that Apple will keep the phone the same size, with a 4-inch screen. The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner (just 7.6 millimeters) than the iPhone 4 and 4S and it’s expected that Apple will keep the same thinness and perhaps the same weight, weighing just 112 grams.”

Ciaccia writes, “The big new feature people are expecting from the iPhone 5S is fingerprint technology, or biometrics, allowing users to unlock their phones with their fingerprints, instead of entering a password… In addition to the fingerprint technology, the iPhone 5S will likely have a larger and better camera… There’s a high likelihood that Apple will unveil the latest version of its A-series processors, the 64-bit A7, used to run its iDevices. The A7 is reported to be 30% faster than its predecessor, the A6. Apple designs its own chips using intellectual property from ARM Holdings.”

    1. yes big step for 4S’ers but I think 5 owners will get a giant bang out of the new iOS and big changes in battery life plus camera upgrades! that’s for ALL OF US lucky iApple device owners….

    2. Don’t judge a new iPhone by the back of its case. Have you noted that none of the rumor sites have shown the FRONT?

If fingerprint recognition is indeed true, we may be in for some great surprises as third party developers use this to enhance their offerings. Oh, and speaking of software, you may have overlooked that iOS7 is about to become available. I’ve talked with developers who have told me it’s AWESOME.

I am skeptical that a 64-bit version of the A7 CPU might be on the new iPhone (I expect it would debut with the next iPad update), but I have been wrong plenty of times before. The point is that there will be more in store than you assume.

Until you actually try out the next iPhone update, don’t be so quick to judge. Eating your words isn’t exactly fun.

      1. The 5S will get the A7 most likely just like the 4S got the A5 and the 5 got the A6.
To coincide the next iPad after the 4S got the A5X, after the 5 the next iPad got the A6X. Keeping with that convention the 5S will get the A7 and the next iPad will the the A7X.

    1. I have inside info that the phone will have micro-thin layers of helium throughout the phone making it the first phone that can levitate anywhere you place it in 3D space.

Since I have very little space on my desk, and prefer to float my phone about 3 inches above my monitor, this feature alone will make it a mandatory upgrade for me!

  1. I think the story is not going to be the phone but iOS. People that buy Ice Cream Sandwich are not power users. iOS users are power users. The “nano” type color scheme on cheaper phones will be something. But I think a “wow” is coming in iOS7 that is going to kill Android.

Or, it will be a flop!

  2. To heck with the BS. I want an Iphone w/ VZW that can surf & talk at the same time when NOT on WiFi. And speaking of that, when on WiFi, the talk sucks for the reciprocate and calls get dropped more times than many !!!
