Apple’s Maps being updated often and significantly

“There is no doubt that Apple is working hard on improving its iOS Maps application in the past few months. The results can be seen in an update to the app this week in Japan, but Apple has been steadily releasing updates for countries and cities from around the world,” Jim Dalrymple reports for The Loop.

“Maps may have disappointed some users when it was first released, but when Tim Cook said he was focusing Apple’s attention to fix the issues, he meant it,” Dalrymple reports. And it shows.”

      Turn-by-turn
Missing in the feature-lacking Google maps built-into the old IOS.
Apple had to drop a fun gimmick to gain something incredibly useful, a good choice in my opinion.

    1. Except that Google Maps sucks (not a little bit, but BIG TIME) for public transportation in my area (Belgium). The bus company (De Lijn) and the railways (NMBS) each have excellent apps for this, though. For a normal mid-day 40km direct bus ride, Google Maps has shows me an route with a detour by the Netherlands, that would take me 22 hrs.

  1. I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my little area of the world. Now have a beautiful satellite view which is far more up to date than Google. The only little niggle now is the silly spelling mistakes on some street names.

  2. Lack of public transit options is a huge fail. And, to keep it personal, I’ve now sent in a correction about a local school (Maps has the name wrong, seems a simple fix, right?) three times, all to no avail. The first one I sent in on the same day Maps began. So…, just what am I to think?

    1. Wouldn’t you guess that whomever has been aggregating public transit information is playing hard-to-get with Apple? That’s the only reason I can think for a green company like Apple to not be caught up on mass transit.

Although from Apple’s perspective on priorities, they could be evaluating (admittedly from a US perspective) that 306.8M residents have registered 254.4M automobiles, and since generally 1/5th of the population are kids still in school, getting roads right for the nearly 100% of adults is a really high priority.

And I’m not trying to diminish your need for Maps to provide assistance with public transit.

  3. Very accurate for me. When learning to use the app, I navigated home a couple of times. Across the street, Maps told me to keep going – when pulling into the garage Maps told me I was home. Used the Maps app last weekend in Las Vegas and it was more accurate than Google.

  4. The thing I’d really for them to change is give me a little more warning when my turn is coming up. You don’t know how many times I had to miss my turn because I was in traffic and didn’t have advance enough warning that my turn was approaching.

  5. Apple maps has worked for 99% of the time for flawlessly in the Los Angeles area.

But when it fails, it fails epically.

For example, it still thinks the LA Zoo is in the middle of the LA river, apparently floating in the water.

I already submitted this issue over a month ago And still no change.

So, in the la area, it’s not being updated fast enough.

PS, I use it daily as my job requires it.

    1. That’s bizarre! But the other search suggestions can get you there, but reveal more bizarre stuff. “Los Angeles Zoo, Los Angeles, CA” finds it (I think) but also gives below the pin a “L.A. Zoo and Botanical Gardens”
If you tap on the search suggestion for “los angeles zoo” you get pins all over SoCal for zoos everywhere. That’s probably “intelligence” being applied to searches from people out of the area who would not know to search for “zoos in southern california” 🙂

  6. Updated significantly and frequently?

My whole street and estate are still showing as a field and lake – minus the 1000 or so houses that have been built over the previous 5 years. #fail

  7. Maps still needs lots of work in New Zealand. For example, Timaru Airport still appears 200 km away in the middle of an up-market Christchurch suburb. This clanger made the the front page of the local morning paper last year, with one resident wondering whether it explained the increased noise levels in his street.

  8. Apple maps are still bad in Canada. Major sections of highways (50 and 30) are missing in the Quebec province. Even if you notify apple, nothing gets done.

Google is better! I wish apple would do something. Sad….

  9. BULLSHIT!! Every single search item in Australia is off. It’s like they have used the wrong map datum because if you search for a town it puts a pin about 30km south west every time

  10. Now if Apple would only get the addresses correct.

This morning I tried out the map app on my iPhone 5 to find a client whom I have not seen in about two years.

Fortunately, I vaguely remembered the location. The Apple Map app was off by about 5 miles. Google’s map app was perfect.

Another problem report off the Apple.

  11. Not true. Local city hospital carries the name of another regional hospital. I’ve sent several thorough correction reports since last November — nothing fixed. Also doesn’t know the difference between letters o and ä.
Still has has long way to go…

That’s why I still have an iPad 2 not updated to the new iOS to be able to use Google maps and street view with Contacts

  12. Sent Apple multiple things to update in Edmonton, Canada last year, soon after maps went live, and NONE of the things have been fixed. Even satellite view shows things years old.

They certainly haven’t put the resources behind it that Google has.

  13. The only F#^kn’ thing that royally pi$$es me off is the d@nn thing just won’t take the highway!!!

Why would I want to take the “shortest route” that takes 45 minutes longer though 3 dozen traffic lights!!!

    Royally sucks. Need my Garmin!!!

    Whew…taking a breath now…

  14. They can “update” all they want but until they get street view, public transit, and walking directions back they’re just polishing a turd as the dumbing down of Apple continues.
