“In the 1994 Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump, there’s a short scene in which Tom Hanks’s character opens a letter of thanks from Apple after his former military colleague and business partner Lieutenant Dan invested some of the profits from the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in ‘some kind of fruit company,’ Killian Bell reports for Cult of Mac.
“If Gump was real and if he was still clinging on to his investment today, he could have a staggering 12 million shares in the Cupertino company worth around $7 billion,” Bell reports. “FancyDressCostumes.co.uk decided it would be fun to calculate what that investment in Apple would be worth today, ‘as a way of illustrating Apple’s extra-ordinary growth.’ How much of the shrimping profits Dan invested exactly isn’t mentioned in the movie, so a notional amount of $100,000 is used for this. Given the success of the Bubba Gump Shrimping Company, that’s certainly a plausible figure, and it would have given the pair around a 3% stake in Apple at the time (1970s).”

Thats pretty funny.
Cool! A visionary man he is.
Lt. Dan also invested in Microsoft. But that stock just didn’t have legs.
Oh, Chrissy!
(Yes, I’m giggling. I’m going to Hell with you)
NHL – I hope you’re a girl.
He is.
+1 (of course)
Chortling is good early (01:16 AM Tuesday – Australia time) in the morning! Thanks for the laugh.
Oh C1, that made my day!
Might I add that Lt. Dan’s magic legs is the same metal used for the MS Surface. It’s ALL magical. And that’s all I have to say about that!
Interesting. Apple once made a PowerBook with that same material.
‘s mah boat…
That same year, a family member sold a large commercial property and had $450,000 to blow. I encouraged him to invest in Apple and pushed him to have faith that it would highly-benefit him in the long run. Can you imagine how much he would be worth right now had he just trusted me?
…instead, he bought a house and a couple of cars and blew the rest. He kicks himself in the ass daily now.
Not to shabby for a “Fruit Comp’ny”!
Now THAT is a story angle!
Stupidest story EVER! “Notional $100,000” (i.e. made-up). They never say how much he invested in the movie. Jesus Christ…. Writer today struggle so hard to come up with an Apple story.
Okay, can we at least say that if one Apple share was purchased, and they held on that share, would they have made money on it? And if it did, then can we say the more shares purchased, the more money made off them?
Of course, the movie clip shows Gump saying they don’t need to worry about money any more so maybe, 100,000 shares is low balling the quantity of shares.
On a side not, if you are complaining that the story is just stupid because Gump is just a movie… Okay, but take it with a grain of salt.
One less thing to worry about!
Wonderful, offbeat, Apple story.
Sum kanda fraut compnay…. Lol apple computer inc
If you google the letter, it was dated 1975 and talked about Lisa, the future of apple
