Netflix now offers integrated iTunes sign up and 1080p HD streaming on new Apple TV

“We’re always looking for ways to make the Netflix experience simpler and better. Starting today, you can sign-up for Netflix directly on your Apple TV and pay via your iTunes account,” Bill Holmes, Vice President of Business Development at Netflix, blogs via the Netflix Blog.. “Plus, with the new third generation Apple TV, you’ll also be able to watch thousands of hours of great movies and television streaming on Netflix in 1080p high definition and with room-filling Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.”

Holmes reports, “Now, with a software update on your Apple TV, this seamless sign up and billing experience extends to the second generation Apple TV. The new sign up and payment experience on Apple TV is available wherever Netflix is, including in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland.”

  1. “We’re always looking for ways to make the Netflix experience simpler and better.”

Whoa there, what was this brainstorm they had with two services and that better, for Netflix, pricing they gave use. Hey, I still remember that- canceled! I will wait for Apple, thank you.

  2. I must be dreaming — this is HUGE. I ordered the new Apple TV earlier today and just assumed the Netflix experience would be sub-par on our big screen. Very happy to be dead wrong!

  3. I’m probably the only person who thinks that this is a sub-par update. Happy to see 1080p, but the truth is the A4 chip can handle 1080p, but you will not be able to use the current AppleTV to do so. It seems to me that Hardware ID’s are restricting 1080p access, even though the A5 chip is more powerful. I also believe that Apple is doing a “slow” rollout of updates.

The reason I say this is that I have been watching 1080p videos with a jail broken ATV2 with XBMC. With my non jail broken ATV2 (I have 2 ATV2’s – one for straight watching and one for tinkering), I upgraded to OS 5.0 and it refused to even identify 1080p videos.

Another thing. Xbox has had Netflix at 1080p for over a year now so this isn’t really news. Add to that, the whole treating the menu as an App thing was actually done with Boxee. Luckily I have all three of these devices and noticed it immediately. The disappointment is that the ATV update has about 15 Apps, while Boxee has over 150! I was also hoping for a Fifa or Premier league bundle.

So for me, a little disappointing.
