Apple iPad 3 likely to be severely constrained at launch and beyond, say sources; no 64GB model?

“Apple may not unable to ramp up the supply of its next-generation iPads (iPad 3), which are expected to be launched at a company event on March 7, due to insufficient supply of high resolution displays, according to industry sources in the supply chain,” Siu Han and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“The new iPad, which reportedly will come in 16GB and 32GB versions, will continue to be equipped with 9.7-inch panels but with a display resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels (264ppi) …the whole supply chain has failed to substantially ramp up the supply of QXGA panels, the sources revealed,” Han and Shen report. “Shipments of iPad 3 [will] start gaining momentum in the second quarter, the sources stated.”

  1. I’m really challenged by the concept of NOT having a 64GB model. This is a mobile device. Moving and streaming movies over wifi – when you are MOBILE and away from solid bandwidth is an awful experience (and expensive). My god – could you imagine if these movies were HD now that we’ll have a primo display?? I hope that this rumor is wrong.

    1. Remember, the operative word in this whole “story” is RUMOR.

Here, I’ll start my own – I heard from a source who once knew someone who worked for Foxconn, who told someone who used to live in China, that the iPad 3 is going to max out at 256 GB.

  2. This story strikes me as very suspicious.

First, some of the largest electronics companies in the world can’t make displays for the iPad 3, despite the fact they’ve had months and months to work on it.

Second, although the displays can’t be produced today, the article tells us that in the second quarter, it will be possible to produce them. (Now how could they know that?)

Third, iPad 3’s will be available in 16gb and 32gb models. (I would have expected 32/64/128.)

  3. I think whoever wrote this article has been playing with Eric, Stevie, and Mikey. This article obviously does not reflect reality. Apple doesn’t do things that way. Honestly, these reporters and pundits need to stay away from the delusional 3 (D3) its starting to rub off on others. 🙂

  4. Conspiracy theory time: AAPL has been doing well the past few days, time for some stupid rumors to knock back the stock a bit. Anyone see Cramer around lately…

  5. Yeah, no 64GB model… It’ll actually be 128GB since we’ll all want to store 1080p HD movies now instead of 720p and also improved apps and games that will require more storage.

No way Apple will allow the iPhone to have more storage than the iPad.

  6. Limiting the iPad3 to 32GB is exactly what they should do if they want to users to adopt iCloud. Think about it. The success of their whole cloud strategy hinges on quick user uptake of iCloud services. Right now users overall are a little luke warm on relying on iCloud. Limiting local storage would ‘friendly-force’ users to begin adoption.
