If Android is so hot, why has Java ME overtaken it?

“From the perspective of NetApplications, which has been measuring browser usage data since 2004 (currently monitoring the activity of 160 million users on 40,000 sites), Apple’s (AAPL) iOS is the still reigning champion of the World Wide Web among mobile operating systems (including tablets),” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

P.E.D. reports, “Oracle’s (ORCL) Java ME is now the world’s fastest growing mobile OS, having retaining the No. 2 spot it lost briefly to Android in October.”

    1. My guess is that there is still a fairly solid group of corporate BB users. These folks have pretty consistent online use profiles for business. I also believe that there are a fair number of consumers who are not fond of touch screens. I remember seeing a lady with long nails who was unhappy with her iPhone 4 because it was difficult for her to operate. I heard her wishing for her old BB.

RIM has also been trying to upgrade their devices to improve the user experience. The newer BB models might have spurred a slight increase in online usage.

      1. What I don’t get is why the new BB Bold is almost 2x more expensive than the latest Torch ($170 vs $80 on 3 year contract in Canada; yet both $600 if bought outright). Same pixels but smaller screen size, no touchscreen, almost every other feature the same including “4G” HSPA.

  1. The fact is iOS unlike the hemroid platform is actually used by the people that but the phone or tablet. I know tons of hemroid settlers who bought the phone because the iPhone was not in stock/sold out or that the had no real idea of the difference. Then when they get the smartphone they use it like the dumb phone it is. They make phones calls maybe check email but rarely use the phone for much more than that. Not true of the iOS peeps. It’s so easy to use and there are so many great free or inexpensive apps to choose from they real get excited to learn to use more features and apps. Which is good news for the iOS ecosystem.
Did I mention that there are no iOS virus’s but the hundreds possibly thousands of hemroid viruses on that wild west stolen platform.
Yes I said stolen. From Apple, Oracle and others. The day will come and hopefully soon and googles pockets will be lighter and they will have more egg on their faces.

Did I mention google is watching you hemroid sufferers they know what you do, watch and where you surf hell they know where you are standing now. So continue to get you fake iPhones and fake iPads the rest of us need the real stuff not the cheap poorly made, plastic slabs of thrown together crap thrown together by pc builders. As usual no innovation comes from constipation.

    Nuff said.

    1. Although you make some points, your tone and name calling will not help any Android users make the leap to iOS. While extolling the virtues of the iPhone, you could GENTLY point out the flaws in Android.

Telling someone they are stupid will never result in them becoming smart (even if you repeat it dozens of times).

      1. SuperKmart’s tone is downright civil compared to steaming heaps of vitriol found all over the internet, and he didn’t actually call android users stupid, just they settle for cheap phones and don’t do much with them. Besides, the enormity of google’s cynical theft of Apple’s pioneering genius can only appropriately be described with the verbal equivalent of thermonuclear war.

      2. As far as being gentle with Android users. Is that my responsibility?
I made some points never called them anything but settlers. I can’t think of a way to express it any clearer or nicer.
Go on a hemroid site and see how gentle they are to iOS users.
I guess you think because of their inability to choose intelligently they are in need of a gentle coddle. I think a bit differently I think that we have not done a good enough job in pointing out the differences except perhaps on this site MDN.
My tone was not mean spirited but simply pointed out a few facts.
        01. Google flatly and poorly copied Apple’s iPhone and iPads.
        02. Android sufferers get their phones 2 or 3 for one what a success that is. You have to give a lot a way to break even.
        03. Viruses abound. Google does not care a bit about it, if they did they would have done something to stop them on their platform. Maybe they should have copied that from Apple also.
        04. They stole code from Oracle and lied about it and continue to do so.
        05. Android products are thrown together junk just like your average PC. Don’t believe me open one up and compare it to a Mac or iPhone or iPad. It’s a work of art versus a piece of sh_t!

        1. Here is an image of the insides of a high end pc.

It looks really really well built
And the benchmarks of s2, and htc amaze,

As for viruses, its because you have the freedom to install apps directly from websites. Some are really cool like emulators that let you play video game console games (nes,snes,psx,n64), but some sites could easily give advertise their virus as an app of course.

        2. This is a picture that is a perfect example of my point. A motherboard they did not make or design, in a case they had to put LEDs everywhere to make it look amazing. Here is the rule put all sorts of blinking lights on it and people will pay more for it. This is nothing more than yet another low end sheet metal case made by yet another company. With a parts that everyone else uses. There is no innovation here just the standard me too parts every PC assembler uses, Dell, HP etc the rest of the PC pushers. if most people knew that Dell and HP PC’s are made by other companies almost entirely they would simply buy them elsewhere.

Is it any wonder that everyone copies Apple? MacBooks, MacBook Airs, iPhones, iPads . Apples GUI, and now iPod nanos, iPod touches etc etc…

When the rest of the industries ideas of innovation means copying what Apple does is it innovation? When MicroSoft opens Stores to compete with Apple directly and copies everything about them it means they have no clue what to do. In design, development, marketing and sales they are all outclassed in every way. There is a reason Apple is the largest company in the world. Here’s the secret they care about what they do and they know what people want or what they will want. Making something cheaper that sort of looks like Apples gear won’t work anymore as the cat is out of the bag. People are smarter. Even the hemroid settlers/sufferers are figuring it out.

Lastly if you are a hemroid assembler Google just took a dump on you by buying Motorola and by letting you pay the chek. Kind of like a dine and dodge.

Btw here is what a work of art looks like.

        3. You really outdid yourself there. The machine I linked to is a high end alienware. The hardware in it, puts the top of the line MACs to shame. There is not a single part in the best MAC that is better (except the moniter, as towers don’t have one). Then again the price of course show that to be the case. I use that MAC at work, along with a PC, and they are both pretty awesome pieces of equipment. For you to say that PCs have all the same parts while referencing that alienware clearly shows you don’t know much about computer hardware. Not only is everything better, but the GPU just puts any apple computer to shame. Its not about who makes chinese labor put things into a smaller box we are talking about, we are talking about pure processing power. I think alienware computers are overpriced, just like are most apple computers. Long story short you proved yourself to know very little about hardware. Its mere brand fanatism of course

        4. Andy.. you show a jpeg image of a computer and someone is expected to know all of it’s specs inside? You don’t give any model number or anything. It doesn’t prove anything of his hardware knowledge. No Windows PC can be compared to the quality that is Apple because ITSS: IT’S THE SOFTWARE, STUPID. Alienware isn’t “just like most apple computers”.. it doesn’t have Mac OS X and never will. It’s not fanaticism when you simply appreciate the best OS out there (something the other PC vendors will never have).

        5. Dear Andy,

The fact that your a supposed iOS developer and prefer android tools speaks volumes. Good luck with them fragmentation is so much fun to write for. Second Alien ware is crappy dell stuff with a flashy cheap sheet metal case closed. Not an innovator not a designer just a repackaged dell xps box with a better video card and maybe the hard ware Dell should put in standard anyway. As far as it being better than a Mac design your only kidding yourself. Look at the mobo the density the layout it’s artwork at apple any real hardware guy would admit that unless you are also a hardware/developer guy too. Aside from IBM who btw is a true innovator the rest are nothing more than underwhelming post pc era junk. However as with the CEO of Microsoft please remain where you are forever. Uninformed, out of touch and technologically impotent.

A pc first drags around a bloated windows os then antivirus software to try and patch all the freaking wholes in their Swiss cheese OS and that’s why you need a high performance re-packaged dell.
Made by someone else completely for dell. Real innovation there. Here are tons of happy Alienware clients. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/alienware.html

To bad they are not as happy as the Apple customers 90% plus customer satisfaction over there. In the words of Michael dell CEO of dell and Alienware for that matter I think he should sell the company and pay back the stock holders.

        6. When did I say I prefer android dev tools. I said android is a better os, I did not say that the tools are easier. Emulator wise, running on java, and on top of the OS the android emulator is not fast. Using the real device, however, with Eclipse, yeah most people actually find the android much easier to develop custom apps. Eclipse is beyond the best offered by xcode, although xcode is nicer to do quick apps that look pretty good as it has a wysiwig type editing. Now as far as Alienware, I did say it was overpriced. So its apple. If price is no object though, there is no world where an apple mac will do better than an alienware. Its a simple fact. And as for development, I am just starting with Android development. Things like having a file system allow for many more possibilities. In fact one of the reasons adobe release photoshop touch for android first. On the ipad, for example the only way of transfering data for something like the adobe touch app is through their cloud as is the case with adobe ideas. On the android you get both. So yes, as a developer I see much more possibilities with the android software.
Also as far as windows having security problems. There have been many articles that show the security is far more advanced in windows 7 compared to snow leopard, and perhaps now even lion. The problem is its also 900% more popular. I am not debating that mac osx is great though. I like it as much as windows 7.

        7. Andy, please link the articles where you found Windows is more secure than Lion. I do computer repair and find this statement to be ridiculous in real world situations.

          Regarding Eclipse versus Xcode:

Installation : The iOS SDK is an all-in-one installer with the development IDE Xcode, simulators and the tool kit bundled together. But for Android development you need to install each component on a separate basis like the development IDE Eclipse, Android tool kit for Eclipse, JDK etc

Platform release schedules : The updates and releases must be known to the developer so that he can make sure that the application is stable with all major changes and on all devices. For iOS, the releases are very predictable while for Android , there is no control on when the updates are scheduled to be released.

Testing : Since Android is open source and is supported in numerous devices, it need to be put under exhaustive testing techniques whereas Apple has limited devices which support the OS and therefore, its applications will be well fitted to that set of devices.

RE: “Now as far as Alienware, I did say it was overpriced. So its apple. If price is no object though, there is no world where an apple mac will do better than an alienware. Its a simple fact.”

ITSS (It’s the software, stupid).. Nothing matches Mac OS X Lion. It is truly the best operating system out there. Check the reviews, asshat.

        8. Even beyond just testing eclipse is a better tool. Emulator wise though, the xcode emulator is my favorite. Im not debating that.
As for the whole alienware comment, if you read the previous comments, the conversations was about hardware. And even if it was software, I am not gonna say windows 7 destroys lion, because there are many things i like in Lion. To say lion is without a doubt the best though is just fanaticism. And for your feelings to be hurt (to have to call me names) for debating that there are other products which are better, or at least in the same level just shows you are a fanatic.

  2. There was not much leaning to be had from SuperKmarts rambling. He did not take the time to extoll any apples virtues save for saying there are many great apps and features to use. This is most true of Android also. That said, there is no doubt Android may have some issues such as Malware ( not yet experienced by me) and the fact that there is probably much capturing of personally identifiable information by all the permissions associated with the apps and that is frustrating to me. I may switch to an apple yet but right now, I’m loving my android.

    1. SuperKmart was just venting. But if you want Apple’s virtues extolled, how about this:
      — Apps on iOS are consistently better than the corresponding apps on Android. This is due partly to the Android developers’ need to target the “lowest common denominator” of Android devices, and partly because the Android development tools are widely known to be total ass.
      — iOS devices receive prompt OS updates for years after you buy them. Android devices only get OS updates when the carrier deigns to allow you to have them, and the delivery is far from “prompt”.
      — iOS devices interface with iTunes (though this is no longer required). While there are valid criticisms of iTunes, it’s inarguable that it’s a powerful tool for downloading and managing digital content. iTunes allows you to leverage the far greater downloading speed of your computer and quickly copy the content to your iOS device. I can’t imagine dealing with podcasts if I had to do everything on the phone.
      — Mac+iPhone+iPad+AppleTV+iTunes is the most powerful ecosystem on the market. Android can’t even come close. Thinking of Android vs. iOS as merely a smartphone battle is not seeing the whole picture.
      — iMessage. Most of my family and friends who have smartphones have iPhones, which means I can text them for free, without having to download a special app or sign up for a service, using the same interface used for SMS messages.
      — The iPhone has full iPod functionality. Let’s be blunt: Apple has the best software for consuming music and videos on a portable device, and everyone knows it.
      — Siri. There’s little I can say here that hasn’t been said already. It’s the best voice-recognition software out there. It recognizes words and proper nouns you’d think an AI has no business understanding. As long as I don’t mumble, it always understands me, and even it when it doesn’t quite understand me, 95% of the time it figures out what I want anyway!

Look, face facts. If you truly want a Smartphone, a portable computer you will use multiple times every day, maybe every hour, you want an iPhone. Android phones are for people who want basic smartphone functionality in a cheaper phone, hacker types who get a thrill from “rooting” their phones, and software pirates.

      ——RM

      1. I am a developer. I love IOS development tools, however there are some apps on android that are far better than anything on ios.
        Most notably the google apps.
Youtube, gmail for example which are popular on both systems just feel outdated on the ipad. The UI on the android there is far superior. More done with less taps.
As for the ecosystem. The google ecosystem is much more complete and simple. You switch a phone, or tablet. You put your user on the new device, and automatically you have all your calendar, music, contacts, facebook contacts, twitter contacts (contacts are linked, the phone knows when a contact is the same twitter user, facebook user, google + user)… Also with your facebook account the phone gives you the contact info shared for all your friends in facebook. Its like the iCloud, but without the need of a desktop as the middle man interface.

For people with a google account the ecosystem is as simple as can get. Everything you mange with the google account is automatically part of your phone, furthermore you can have multiple google accounts syncing together so you can separate two identities on the web, but still receive all the data in your phone.

As for the point about music. Google music, which is brand new on android devices, is leagues and bounds above itunes.

As for Siri I dont use it much because it fails sometimes, but I do like it better than the android version. Its somewhat more precise. Keep in mind android phones do have a similar feature.

For anyone considering purchasing either ios5 or android devices, let me know of any questions. I am planning to make a video soon. Maybe in 2 or three weeks, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of both. The hardware I have available is an ipad, and asus transformer for tablet comparison. And an iphone 4, and htc amaze (its amazing) for phones

        1. Be sure to check back in 3 weeks or so. I’ll make sure to include that on the video. Im not going by the marketing of either company, but rather by the experience of having these test device which I have for web dev purposes.

        2. I have no affiliation with google. If I did, would have replied with different names to make it seems like I am multiple people with the same idea. I am just writing because, owning and working daily with all these devices, I feel other people should know there are other alternatives, which are just as good, and some which may be even better (considering they are newer releases of course).

        3. Andy, I could spend time refuting every one of your claims, but I am going to focus on two points: you say Siri fails sometimes and it is better than the “android version”. If you truly used Siri, you would see that Android has NOTHING that compares to it. NOTHING.

Then I read your next paragraph where you said the iPhone you have access to is a 4. Apparently then you have never used Siri because it is available on iPHone 4s only.

          Fail.

        4. Well, I am talking about the iphone 4s yeah. Thats the one that will be on the video. It does Siri. And yeah, the android’s version is not as good, but its not all that far behind. I can cover that as well. It is one of the advantages of the iphone. The whole idea of the video is so that people can also see android has many advantages. Of course thats not to say everything is better. You need less processing power on ios to get similar performance. iOs doesnt multitask (its not real at least), and therefore the RAM is more freely available to the actions in it. On many scenarios thats all you need, however sometimes in the middle of a call is nice to be able to be able to be doing other stuff just like you do on a computer (pc, mac or linux).

These advantages are of course available on high end androids only. In fact the tip top Androids Id say are definitely better. But thats just the amaze and s2 out of the ones I have to test. The droid its supposed to be better than the two phones I am mentioning however.

        5. Exacly WHAT multitasking abilities are available on Android that aren’t available on iOS Andy? Please tell us since all of your insinuations don’t have ANY grounds to stand on. I’m sure your fluff piece on YouTube will be slanted in favor of Android which won’t be appreciated when people want reality based thinking instead. I’d say stop letting Google fuck you up the ass and stick with the iPhone, but I think you’re being paid by Google to be on these message boards so that will do no good.

        6. I have given proof for all I have said, furthermore I can and will make a video since I have the devices to compare. I am not responding based on fanaticism, but actual experience.

As for your question of multitasking, when was the lastime, you had a call, and needed some info. In the middle of the call you had to look in your mail, texts, notepad or some other application, or even your music software if it was a specific song you were looking for. Or how about something more complex. You are encoding a file, plus the above situations. iOS does not do multitasking, so that is one example. For 99.99% of the time people wont be able to tell. I am just pointing it out.
And what are you 12?(read your comments) No wonder you are uncapable of even noticing there are competing products.

As for the video, what do you want me to include. I’ll make sure to include it if you think it will slanted. I’ll start with tablets for the first video. So anything ios does that honeycomb doesnt do let me know. I will mention it in the video.

        7. Dear Andy

There has been no proof at all for what you have been saying at all. Everything you state is empty words without documented proof. I stand my ground regarding Google fucking your ass and you being paid by Google. You don’t have to be 12 to notice that.

In your video, I’d like you to mention how you are paid by Google. That would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

        8. I see correctu, that you are as smart as the chimp in your avatar.

I asked you to tell me the things that apple does better so I show that in the video, and your comeback was to insult me. I can certainly add that to the video. You couldn’t think of anything. There are some things as a developer that I know are awesome in iOs, like the hardware acceleration in css3 graphics. But you could not mention anything because you have no idea what you are talking about. And I am no hired by google. If I was I would not have mentioned in these post that there are some things iOS does well like the hardware acceleration, nor that I like lion as much as I like win 7. If you have to insult as your only defense for debate, you must be the one getting done in the ass by apple. Because you are reacting as if I dissed your girlfriend. And your sentence you don’t have to be 12 to notice that? Were you able to interpret the logic of what you said or are you that stupid. Here it is again just as you said it “you dont have to be 12 to notice that. I have not called anyone names, here until now, because I am not taking shit from you, you apple fascist.

        9. “I see correctu, that you are as smart as the chimp in your avatar.”

Please see more clearly I’m just stating facts. You are a shill for Google and it couldn’t be more obvious.

“I asked you to tell me the things that apple does better so I show that in the video, and your comeback was to insult me.”

What “honeycomb tablet” are you referencing to may I ask? Honeycomb tablets have names.. which one are you comparing to the iPad? Your generalizations are almost as annoying as your outright lies. Please give more detail such as a brand name and model.

“You couldn’t think of anything. There are some things as a developer that I know are awesome in iOs, like the hardware acceleration in css3 graphics. But you could not mention anything because you have no idea what you are talking about.”

Exactly! Your generalizations leave me with nothing to talk about. What “honeycomb tablet” are you referencing to (please give brand and model number.)

“And I am no hired by google. If I was I would not have mentioned in these post that there are some things iOS does well like the hardware acceleration, nor that I like lion as much as I like win 7.”

Yes you would.. that’s how a troll commonly works. You try to play up how you like the competition while at the same time criticizing it (since that’s your actual motivation). If you actually read reviews from actual competent writers unlike yourself, you’d understand why Mac OS X Lion is leaps and bounds better than Windows 7, for example. Your comments scream Google shill.

“If you have to insult as your only defense for debate, you must be the one getting done in the ass by apple. Because you are reacting as if I dissed your girlfriend. And your sentence you don’t have to be 12 to notice that? Were you able to interpret the logic of what you said or are you that stupid. Here it is again just as you said it “you dont have to be 12 to notice that. I have not called anyone names, here until now, because I am not taking shit from you, you apple fascist.”

As I’ve stated before: “flowers may grow in bullshit, but you don’t get flowers when the bullshit is actually coming from your mouth.”

.. given your generalizations and outright lies there’s no need to give you the respect you seem to desperately want. You have no integrity. Go play the martyr as much as you want… it doesn’t play well here. WE DON’T LIKE YOUR BULLSHIT!

        10. What reviews are you talking about. The reviews always put ios near Android. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20068741-233/new-ios-5-features-compared-to-android-blackberry-windows-phone/
The closed system in iOs means third party apps can’t interact with the device, so if apple does not introduce a feature it doesn’t have them. Also look for reviews of the galaxy tab, S2, nexus, amaze, sensation. I am not saying they are better although some reviewers agree, but rather than at the very least by all reveiws the OSs are at the very least comparible which you can’t admit having never touched an android. As for honeycomb, thats the OS of course, and obviously you know very little about the tablets which have similar specs. The ones I have to test are the galaxy tab, and of transformer prime which puts it as uncomparable, but then again is also next gen. So surely there will be many better in some time. You can add usb data, interact with USB devices, controllers and more. If you knew about honeycomb you would not have even asked because all the honeycomb tablets (at least for the most part can do this). Well this the last post here. I’ll put the reply in my spam folder. Its obviously going to be name calling again. I said I could mention whatever you want in the video, but obviously you don’t even know what to mention having no experience whatsover with anything outside of apple. There is also windows 8 around the corner (You must be shocked there are other companies other than apple making stuff). And remember I never said your girlfriend apple sucks, so don’t get all angry. Im just saying she is right at the same level as the others.

        11. The following are things you should mention in your tablet review:

In your review, please mention regarding multitasking that while they use different methods, all three platforms now have multitasking. Power users will insist that only Android offers true multitasking, but for most of us, the app-switching experience will be the same on iOS and Windows Phone.

All offer switching between apps — playing music, GPS navigation, VoIP calls, email notifications, and many other tasks to happen in the background.

          From Andy:

“The closed system in iOs means third party apps can’t interact with the device, so if apple does not introduce a feature it doesn’t have them.”

          From PC World:

          “What About Apps?
Android lacks a strong selection of apps. It’s tough to say exactly how many tablet-optimized Android apps are available, but it’s in the low hundreds, and there are even fewer BlackBerry PlayBook apps than that. If you want lots of apps for your tablet, right now, nothing out there beats the iPad with its 90,000+ apps designed specifically for the tablet. Apple’s App Store is well-curated and offers a deep selection—no competitor can come close to claiming this right now, partially because apps made for Android tablets have to work across multiple screen sizes, while iPad apps are designed for a single tablet. It sounds simple, but the variation in size (and manufacturers) complicates things greatly. Eventually, one hopes, the other app stores will catch up to Apple, but if a wide range of compelling apps is your main priority, Apple is currently your best bet.”

You can mention that in your review. (Currently iOS for tablets has now about 140,000 apps)

          Andy:

“You can add usb data, interact with USB devices, controllers and more. If you knew about honeycomb you would not have even asked because all the honeycomb tablets (at least for the most part can do this)”

Replace “USB” with Apple’s connector and you’re all set for Apple’s iOS ecosystem which has more 3rd party devices (hardware) than any of the other tablets. So this point you are trying to prove still falls in favor of the iPad.

Go ahead and mention that in your review, sweet pea.

Those are all of the points you have mentioned (2 of them). Apple is the clear winner in both.

When you ask what reviews I’m mentioning I clearly stated Windows 7 vs Mac OS X Lion.. Walt Mossberg has a great review to help you out.. here’s what he had to say in his bottom line:

“The past two major computer operating system releases, Windows 7 and Snow Leopard, were incremental. Lion is very different. It’s a big leap, and gives the Mac a much more modern look and feel for a world of tablets and smartphones. If you are willing to adjust, it’s the best computer operating system out there.”

Please also mention in your youtube “review” that the iPad 3 is coming out very soon so everything you have to say is pointless and will be outdated within the next 3 months.

(Also mention that the IPad has better battery life, allows you to have search with Google, Yahoo and Bing instead of just Google, and doesn’t have Android’s malware, trojans and viruses because of the “closed” ecosystem you ironically mark as a negative.)

Thanks, Andy, for letting me help you out! If you mention all of these points, you will be all set.

        12. The first point I won’t argue because Ios does have more apps. But there are some exclusives on android either way. Photoshop touch apps, bodies. The YouTube and netflix apps are also a bit better. Overall I do agree iPad has more software. No way to argue that. As for USB, you are saying there are more iPad specific devices than there are USB devices. That is delusional, furthermore USB controllers, memory and more means you can reuse your devicess with both tablet and computers,

        13. That is delusional, furthermore USB controllers, memory and more means you can reuse your devices with both tablet and computers. As for the iPad 3. I’m sure it will bring new stuff. Do keep in mind the CNET article comparing ios5 to android 2.3 which is not even the latest. A year later ios5 added what had been available to android users as you can view on the chart. Notifications is over 2 years old. When the iPad 3 comes out it will indeed be the best until and android or Windows 8 device releases something to beat it. And the cycle will repeat as it does every year. The whole only one company makes good products mentality is not only childish but stupid

  3. So does this mean I have to get an iPhone instead of a blackberry because it’s my first phone and I thought that I could wait as family are buying iPhones??? Thoughts?

    1. Get the 4S if you can afford it. If you can wait until your whole family gets them and that will be soon that should be fine.

Not sure what else you were asking, the iPhone is an amazing phone.

      1. Amazing! Yes! No kidding! I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to 4S just yesterday, and Siri understood what I was saying right out of the box. The interface was faster—silky. Only problem…must select a More FaceTime-friendly shade of lipstick…

        1. Yes. Amazing. And Android is amazingly bad. My 12-year-old son picked up a couple in the store, just to see what they were like. (He also had a similar experience trying a friend’s recent Samsung.) He doesn’t read forums so he had no expectations about what he’d find. Reported the standard problems like repeated jabs to get a response, difficulty navigating between screens, no response at all, jerky animation and more similar faults.

  4. once again this reinforces the point that Android is being used in all kinds of simple phones. IPhone’s monster profit share of 50-66% and developer app profits shows this as well.

Many android phones counted in market share numbers are just minimal feature phones, some (like millions in Asia for example OMS phones) can’t run Google services or Android apps.

It’s time that analysts and many tech writers acknowledge this and STOP COUNTING EVERY ANDROID PHONE as a SMART phone automatically.

It’s like saying automobile market share and then counting every bicycle, tricycle, skateboard, pram and shopping cart…
(tablets show the same trend, some ‘andriod tablets’ in asia are more like digital photo frames for example )

If you look at the numbers released by carriers for smart phone sales you’ll see it does not jive with much touted android smart phone market share numbers because carriers themselves don’t count every android phone as a smart phone but list some as feature phones or basic phones for their quarterly reports.

This is important to investors because one of the reasons aapl is so undervalued is that many believe wrongly that apple is losing the smart phone war but it isn’t true. If analysts stop automatically counting every android phone as a smart phone but take the time to categorize them no way android has 46% (or whatever) of ‘smart’ phone market share.

    1. Dude… Do you bother to read articles before spouting comments that have no relevance to the discussion? For this particular article, you only had to make it the first sentence to find out that they are talking about Internet usage and not “market share”… I’m pretty sure those “dumb” android phones you’re referring to aren’t browsing the Internet. Wake up and read!!!

      1. WTF are you talking about? : you don’t get the drift of my post at all yet you spout.

I”’m pretty sure those “dumb” android phones you’re referring to aren’t browsing the Internet.” EXACTLY what I was trying to get at you stupid moron,

what I’m saying you mor@n is that internet usage (like app and phone profits) shows that not all android phones are the ‘smart’ phones analyst say they are (i.e lumping them with iphones . Pogue and Mossberg call phones of iPhones range app or super smart phones). What I’m saying is that analysts should adjust market share numbers to reflect that many androids are just ‘feature’ or basic phones.

my post is exactly relevant to the article: I’m saying that internet usage (here in this article) as another indication that analysts have got their market share numbers wrong (like Comscore NPD etc) i.e they consider all androids as smart phones.

if market share is not mentioned HERE I can’t bring it up? it’s a widely discussed thing in android vs iOS

you say I don’t read, perhaps YOU SHOULD READ before you open you trap or perhaps you did but your brain cells aren’t all firing?

if you got your head out of your azz maybe you’ll understand people’s post?

  5. People who use Google services must retarded. They don’t mind being data mined every minute. What a bunch of idiotic morons.

But it’s free!!!!! So is the first dose of crack, you dumbass.

    1. With iOS any app can track users using the unique device identifie. Its deprecated but still in the libraries. This means that anyone who wants can track the users of their applications.

  6. If you don’t get an iPhone the terrorists have won. Android is almost certainly being promoted by Al Qaeda, Putin, and China. Its purpose is nothing short of the destruction of Western Civilization, the destruction of Gilligan’s Island reruns, and transfats in baby food.
    Run.

  7. The comments on here have re-enforced my new years resolution to kiss this place goodbye.

I don’t think ive encountered a more self serving, douchebag operation since I started using the internet.

The mods who run this place are anal retentive, censoring monger lowlifes with zero integrity.

When I got my first mac someone said to me “I love Apple but can’t stand most of the users” – I never quite ‘got it’ until I started coming here.

Feel free to reply but really your kidding yourself if you think I’ll read it.

MDN enjoy your aimless waltz through life i certainly won’t miss you losers deleting that which you are incapable of debating.

Dude out and on to new places where the users aren’t so… angry… lol

  8. I’ll repeat it. Android is loaded on every POS that hardware makers sell. Even if the user doesn’t give a crap about usability the cheapest free POS is loaded with Android. No brainer it will flood the market. It’s not a win for Android. The hardware makers don’take much money, developers make diddly squat, users get the best POS to frustrate them. Only Google makes real money. The ads loaded and user data makes it worthwhile for google to steal Apple iOS and stab Steve Jobs/Apple in the back. After all the only ones that will pay with the lawsuits are the stupid Asian companies copying Apple.

    1. Actually a lot of ios 5 features, were stolen from Android. Thats not say thought the the opposite isnt also true. Long story short you are all fanatics to even see there is competition.

      1. Dear Andy.

Please name the company that is making more money than Apple in the smartphone business. No? Try this. Name the handset that sells more units than iPhone. Wait. Name an OS that is sold installed on more devices than iOS.

That would be the competition. Your argument is invalid.

        1. Actually android is installed in more devices than iOS. And probably even more than teh commercial products considering its open source. So how is my argument invalid. And as for the fanatic statement look how most apple users use cursing as their defense. Read some of the other user’s comments.

And if competition was based on installation numbers, then it would be safe to say osx is non existant for example. But osx and windows are competing products. You guys need to get out of your apple cave, and at least be aware there are other products of competitive quality out there.

        2. Kudos andy.. Google should pay you more with this (or at least give you extra credit).. too bad it’s a lie.

When it comes to phones you’d be correct. But, since you mentioned “devices” that would include iPod touch, iPad & iPhone vs Android in which Apple actually has more market share. The “competition” isn’t there. Apple’s iOS simply destroys all alternatives out there.

          Hope this helps! –
          – Correctu.

        3. He amuses me to no end that Andy shill.
He spouts how much better Android tools are from his vast experience and then admits later that he is a newbie to coding for this environment it’s laughable. Then he sends me a jpeg f an Alenware dell machine that gets his fancy because of the blinks lights. It’s like a cat with string I guess.
Google apps are better on googles OS a duh. The rest of us can’t wait to be google free on our iOS. Unlike the hemroid drones we don’t want to be tracked snooped on sold out etc.
In relation to why we don’t run Java actively on iOS. Who cares there amazing dev tools from Apple to do dev with. Tools that let you use all of the features of its not port crap code from device to device and strip it down so the app has no personality at all.
If Apple does someday go with native JAVA unlike Google apple will license it and not steal it. Apple won’t lie about it, try to squirm away from their deeds then say everyone is out to get them.
Google makes an amazing search engine and I use it but with caution. I private browse my machine and make sure they get no info from me. Btw I do not use google maps, or google search on my iPhone 4s.

Friends don’t let friends buy crappy, poorly made knock offs.
