Top 200 Apple App Store apps generate 4 times more cash than entire Google Android Marketplace

“Here’s another astounding factoid: Just the top 200 most-grossing App Store entries generate four times the revenue than everything offered by the Android Marketplace,” Ed Sutherland reports for Cult of Mac.

“A new report also pegs China as a major App Store user, accounting for 30 percent of overall downloads and nearly half of iPad apps,” Sutherland reports. “According to researcher Distimo, after Apple announced it would accept Chinese Yuan, downloads from the Asian country almost doubled, rising to 30 percent – up from 18 percent in January. The numbers are even more staggering for iPad apps. China accounts for 44 percent of all App Store tablet downloads.”

Sutherland reports, “50 percent of App Store cash come from freemium and in-app purchases via the top 200 most-grossing apps, Distimo said. The App Store is still miles ahead of the Android Market. The iPhone alone has 79,077 App Store games, versus 46,045 Android Market game apps. When you toss in nearly 29,000 iPad games, Apple’s lead is even more clear.”

      So, approximately 50 App Store apps generate more cash than the entire Android Marketplace.

      Yes, Eric, any day now developers are going to jump ship from iOS and come running to Android. Aaaany day now…

  1. What is remarkable (but shouldn’t really surprise anyone) is how many Chinese customers are quite happy to pay for those iOS apps. This in a country that is well known for (probably) the highest percentage of counterfeit Windows licenses (in addition to all other popular titles, such as Office, Adobe CS, Sony Vegas, 3D Studio Max, etc…). Those who want quality are quite ready and willing to pay for it, regardless of country.

      1. At $.99 a pop, why bother to pirate. At $200 plus for MS Windows, even the Chinese government bureau’s pirate. $30 bucks for OSX Lion, why bother to pirate. Law of economics and piracy works wonders.

      2. You can still rip stuff out of them. Change the extension from .ipa to .zip then it will unarchive itself. Then, well I’ve only found it good for pinching sound effects and the odd music file that might be in the game but I;m sure more tech savvy people would find other uses.

Google’s Android Marketplace is a Potemkin place filled with apps that cost developers more to make than to sell, much like the empty shelves of the biggest supermarket in North Korea that have goods on show for sale but in reality cost the state more to put them there than to sell them for profit.

    Andy Rubin is Google’s chief communist propagandist, Eric Schmidt is Kim Jong-Il that died after Steve Jobs kicked him in the nuts and was replaced by Larry Page, aka Kim Jong-Un.

As a developer of many popular apps in the app store, I got an email from a guy that just bought an android tablet and he saw my app on his friend’s iPad and was wondering why I hadn’t developed an android version. My response was that I didn’t want to waste my time developing for a platform where I’d expect to get 25% of the revenue I normally get from the app store. I’d rather spend my time developing a new app for iOS.

  4. At some point the greater China market will come to parity or exceed the North American market. I keep wondering if AAPL will begin upgrading China’s release cycle to equal the N.A. first release.

    Of course, if China becomes such a key market that AAPL releases there first, then we in N.A. would feel the pain everyone else feels while waiting for their release date while watching us play with our shiny new iThings.

    1. Not surprising, given the new developments in Asia. Where did Boeing deliver its first 787 Dreamliner? Japan’s ANA (All Nippon Airways). And the second batch went to JAL (Japan Airlines). The third batch will probably go to Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific. These are the largest three airplane buyers with a total of 155 planes on order.

  5. Too bad the app rankings are based on downloads, not on the ratings. For example, indeed, Facebook app has been downloaded many times, but the reviews for the app are not as impressive.

  6. Hopefully, Apple has ushered in a ‘post-marketing’ era along with the ‘post-PC’ era where there is a focus on value for the customer (the ratio of price to features). Apple is showing that companies can be very profitable without resorting to cheap but crappy products. (According to Basille, RIM is going to ‘market’ their way out of their problems over the next year.)
    I agree that the Apps offer real value. Apple software offers real value. I use my iPhone 4 almost as my principal computer so its value is huge – to say nothing of the convenience.
    Maybe the other companies will catch on… or just die.
