Apple today released Safari 5.1.2 which contains various improvements, including fixes that:
• Improve stability
• Address issues that could cause hangs and excessive memory usage
• Address issues that could cause webpages to flash white
• Allow PDFs to be displayed within web content
Safari 5.1.2 is available via Software Update.
MacDailyNews Take: Schnappy!
Sweet!
I would only get the white page when I hit the “show previous page” button. I would only get it on MDN for some strange reason.
Oops, it just happened again. I got story and comments section white, but the left column was okay. I use AdBlock and ClicktoFlash.
and before anyone says it’s Adblock/Click to flash…
I also run those two, but MDN is fine. Had the same problem with another site, I had to actually fire up Firefox to order something… sad.
I disabled all plugins and still had the problem.
Never noticed the memory issues though.
I’ll update Safari later tonight, have to restart after install.
Speaking of Safari, can anyone please tell me why my bookmarks keep moving back to their original position when I drag them to another position?
Probably set to sync with iCloud. You can turn that off in your settings.
Thank-you!
“- Address issues that could cause hangs and excessive memory usage”
Instant download. It’s beyond ridiculous that v5.1.1 of Safari and Safari Web Content processes are taking up almost 500 MB of REAL memory after an hour of light browsing.
Funny. I’ve had Safari 5.1.1 running for days, browsing several hours per day, and it’s showing 185MB of real memory use.
2006 Macbook on Snow Leopard, 2 GB RAM, so losing 1/4 of my actual memory to Safari alone after an hour causes serious HDD thrashing when open apps and OSX itself hits up virtual memory.
This is just from a short observation period, but it does seem to use memory more efficiently, especially when there many windows and tabs open at the same time.
Feels snappy!
I hope this fixes the constant spinning beach balls I have at the moment.
I had the same problem and found that there was spyware on my laptop. Run an anti spyware program that includes your cookies.
I feel left out. I never get those pretty beach balls.
Less than an hour after the update, with only a few pages & tabs open, Safari Web Content real memory usage is up to 820mb.
I’m wishing I could go back to Safari 5.0whatever. 5.1 has been a pain in the ass ever since I updated.
And still no true fullscreen by default without manually tinkering with the darn toolbar. When will Apple be true to the fullscreen trend? So i have to hope for a fix in 5.2 then 🙂
Maybe I’m not understanding, but (under Lion) if you quit Safari with a window open in Full Screen App mode, the next time you launch Safari, that window will open automatically (resume) in Full Screen App mode.
I wish there’d be a way to get rid of “Top Sites” and those “Webpage Previews”. There proliferating and eat up disk space.
In Safari Preferences, General tab, set “New windows open with” and “New tabs open with” to something OTHER THAN Top Sites. Then, don’t click on the little Top Sites button on the Bookmarks Bar (or use other command to show Top Sites). You should never see the Top Sites page.
I find Top Sites very useful, and I have each “tile” set to a specific web page that I often visit. So nothing is “proliferating.”
Who cares about disk space nowadays? It’s not like we are still in the 80s and measuring HDDs in MB (MiB)….
Top sites is the reason why I use almost only Safari. (Opera sometimes if a Site is stubborn enough to ignore Safari)
I like to see if a page got updated without having to visit all of my favorite websites so I can skip those who have no updates. Unfortunately it doesn’t work 100% perfect. Some rare sites (like 9to5Mac) are not analyzed correctly.
Who the heck (other than yourself) said anything about disc space? Reader have been complaining about RAM usage, not drive space. 500 MB of RAM used, 800 MB RAM used, that’s a MAJOR PITA.
(FWIW, I’d like those users to double-check their extensions and see if they’re running AdBlock. 800 + MB RAM usage is something commonly seen when running Safari Adblock).
… Giles mentioned “disk space”.
Or … were you replying to Giles and clicked the wrong link? Or maybe you thought Giles mis-spoke? Anyway … there it is.
Cool…
I use the nightly builds of Webkit as my default browser, but, lately, interestingly, they have a very bad habit of crashing the web engine when I go to iCloud.com. The regular release of Safari is just fine.
Does it fix the issue where Safari logs Facebook visits in the History, even when in Private Browsing mode?
Who are you hiding from saldin? I thought we trusted each other!
I’m not hiding anything, and I’ll vehemently deny it all even in the face of hard evidence
But seriously, can anyone confirm if this is fixed or not?
Nope. Still not fixed. Darn you, Apple!
Does it ship with FLASH? I wants my internets because Adobe says you not have the internets with no flash.
I swear I still hear this BS from people!!! Geez!
I hope this update fixes the bug that prevents the 1Password Safari 5.1 extension from working properly when Private Browsing is activated. Currently you can use one or the other. I’ve been corresponding with the developers at Agile, and they tell me they’ve been begging Apple to fix this for a long time. Really annoying.
Why does opening all bookmarks in a folder remove all existing open tabs? This is the dumbest behaviour and the main reason I use Chrome or Firefox.
Seriously, Apple, have you used your own browser?
