Apple seeds developers with initial iOS 5.1 beta, Xcode 4.3 beta

“Apple has just seeded iOS 5.1 to developers, a pre-release version of iOS that runs on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“In addition, Apple has released Xcode 4.3 beta to developers, a required version of Xcode for those wishing to develop and test their applications with iOS 5.1 devices,” Gurman reports. “This iOS 5.1 release is crucial.”

Gurman reports, “The 5.1 beta brings along an under-the-hood change for alternative interpretations for Dictation input in different apps.”

    1. Agreed! Get that newsstand out of the way! And I wish we had the option of keeping news items in there or keeping them out. If we just have one or two items, it takes longer to get to them when they’re in there. Right now, I just have the Daily and one other item in there. There are other changes we need, too. Why, for example, can’t we reorder our email accounts? Very inconvenient when, like me, we have dozens to check and we’re needlessly scrolling up and down to access some account.

    2. After installing iOS 5 I to tried to put Newstand into my “reading” folder. As you all know it an not be moved into a folder. I noticed that the install put my magazine apps into Newstand then it clicked. Newstand can not go into a folder because it is a “smart” folder. Until Apple allows folders in folders Newstand will stay on the root level.

  1. I saw they released this earlier, I figured MDN would have 18 million emails about it..

I just wanted to note that I read some people still hoping that 5.1 fixes the battery drain issues with the 4S.

I have had my 4S for 5 full days now. Today being the first day I was able to use the 4S how I would typically (back to the hell of work… i mean “I Love my Job!”)
At this point in my day i’d see anywhere between 50-65%, depending on use and such. I’m sitting at 60% as we speak. I will admit I did not use it as much as I would today, but yesterday (sunday) I think I answered 1-2 emails… and thats it. And was sitting over 90% when I went to bed last night. (and yes I plugged it in last night figuring i’d use Siri, showing her off/rubbing her in the faces of the Crapdroids) Ended up not saying anything cause it was a hectic day from Hell.
I did use Siri twice today though, looked up a number and set a reminder. Both over my Bluetooth BTW

Some may be having battery issues, I don’t think I have any problems.
And looking forward to more Siri use.

  2. I agree newsstand is taking up room and should be moved,

Music app is a step backwards and very awkward to navigate. It seems next to impossible to know how to turn off shuffle and whats next to be played.

Played 1.5 hours of angry birds and listened to music all day while surfing on and off. The battery had 5% charge when I got home. That’s 12 hours of usage which is not bad in my book.

  3. If you want other requests, how about the option to pick which email accounts appear on the lock screen? I have four on the phone, but I only want notifications on a couple. Seems easy and obvious enough…
