“Another Apple press event has come and gone. While Apple does grab our attention over and over, we seem to quickly forget the somewhat underwhelmed feeling we get the moment any press event is over,” Geoffrey Goetz writes for GigaOM. “But feelings aside, did Apple deliver what it needed to this year?”
“Overall I would have to say that the new iPhone 4S has about everything that I was hoping it would have. And I’m still hopeful that the changes made in antenna technology under the hood will improve GPS performance as well,” Goetz writes. “It may not be the update some analysts were anticipating, but it should be plenty to keep Apple on top of its mobile game.”

I think the underwhelmingness is real enough, if perhaps misplaced.
Reckon calling it the iPhone ‘V’ would have done the trick, giving new-toy buyers a point of difference, rather than the ‘extra chrome trim’ implication of the ‘4S’ label.
No more rumors. No more keynotes. No analyses- here or elsewhere. I’ll make up my own mind: no, not gonna run out and get a white iPod. Maybe a Mockey Mouse watch at some point, though. The top of the line 4s- it’s what I’ve been waiting for. Unbelievable. I’m way in the loop even if a better one comes out next week. No whining from me no more- I’m getting my first iPhone. And Thank God I didn’t have to get an android.
It’s a naff update and we are all disappointed it needs to be a metal backed phone like the iPad with a 4 inch screen and apple know it. This is just lazy profiteering.
I wish people would realize that the iPhone 4s is the beginning of a NEW FUTURE! Recall John Scully’s ‘Knowledge Navigator’ concept? See the few analyst comparisons? People really think a 1/2 inch is more exciting than conversing in plain language to your phone? I may be the only one to think this, but Apple is building the foundations for the Star Trek future!
Why are people moaning about them not releasing the iPhone 5? There probably won’t be an iPhone 5 because this is the iPhone 5. iPhone 3G was the 2nd iPhone and the 3GS was the 3rd, this is the 5th, the next one will likely be the iPhone 6.
The insides have effectively been totally upgraded and the outside still looks brilliant. What’s the problem?
After reading some financial sites that point out how counterfeiters in China were caught off guard, I wonder whether the 4S wasn’t a bit of a deliberate zig-zag targeting them?
Now I know this is going to get lost in a sea of trolls, but here’s my take for anyone [not] interested…
There was massive anticipation for a total redesign. It wasn’t just about a new shape, it was also about a bigger screen.
Some Android phones already have bigger screens and some of us were looking forward to a bigger screen.
Bigger screens matter, redesigns not so much.
Obviously the under-the-hood improvements are very much welcome. I’m on my 6th iPhone 4 and I can’t wait to get rid of it. Yes it’s a beautiful design but my personal experience has been marred with occasionally sluggish UI (and on a side note, when the hell is that eBay bug going to be fixed? You sign in to normal eBay, go to your summary, press the search bar, press a button, boom… safari is dead. Or God forbid, you rotate the phone on your eBay summary. It was present on all iPhones, I reported it and reported it and still it’s there through soooo many updates)
….annnnyyywaaaayyy…
Sooo, improvements in CPU etc should make the iPhone 4’s sluggishness a thing of the past.
This keynote, sans Siri, just didn’t impress me. I pray Steve’s health improves and he can return to the stage because NOBODY can replace that man’s charisma on stage!
Siri is obviously amazing, and I’m very much looking forward to using it as soon as I can get my hands on the 4S.
Let’s just all take as read from now on that when we get a redesign, the same design will be there the next year!

After an extended wait this was not the show stopper that was expected. CPU & Camera update please. The show stopper in this is Siri, unfortunately even with the long wait Siri is Beta and will only be available to a subset of users\languages for the forceable future, so for everyone else this is just CPU and Camera no big deal if you have an iPhone 4 already.
It’s now a world phone. It’s 2x faster and 7x better graphics. And it supports the 3.5G that everyone is calling 4G.
I’m getting one 🙂 It will be my first iPhone and an upgrade from my second generation iPod touch. Couldn’t be happier 🙂

Seriously guys, its a smartphone- nothing more nothing less. Go out and get a life meet the opposite sex stop w**king over siri (its not a real person). If you are over about 13 years old you will look a complete t**t giving your phone voice commands in the pub/ supermarket etc. Women dont go for the trekkie look! Nobody else is interested in YOUR phone. I have iphone 4 but the sad lost souls/apple obsessives who queue up on launch day etc. Are the reason the iphone attracts onlone abuse from android users. You sad social excludes give normal iphone owners a bad name- savd your money have a wash get some new clothes and lose your virginity lol
