“‘This proposed merger would stifle competition in markets that are crucial to New York’s consumers and businesses, while reducing access to low-cost options and the newest broadband-based technologies. ‘So sayeth New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who is joined by the attorneys general of six other states in support of the Department of Justice suit that sought to halt the pending AT&T/T-Mobile merger,” Chris Velazco reports for TechCrunch.
“The states that have come out in favor of the DoJ suit are New York, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington,” Velazco reports. “Even when facing mounting opposition, AT&T seems rather nonplussed about the whole situation. AT&T spokesperson Michael Balmoris has stated that ‘it is not unusual for state attorneys general to participate in DOJ merger review proceedings or court filings.'”

I have a hard time believing that AT&T is bewildered by the opposition to the proposed merger with T-Mobile. Anyone and everyone could have predicted the general reaction.
Denying the merger won’t achieve the desired goal. All that will happen is it will leave t-mobile very weak and if Apple doesn’t make the iPhone available to them, they are dead men walking. It will be interesting to see who collapses first, t-mobile or RIM. The opposition to the merger will probably benefit ATT, while killing t-mobile.
Exactly. T-Mobile will be out of business in a few years anyway.
Only if they don’t get the iPhone.
That said, in two weeks T-mobile will have an iPhone and they’ll be just fine. As big as AT&T and Verizon? No. As profitable as AT&T and Verizon? No. But T-mobile will be very viable as long as they are managed by executives content with a nice house in a good zip as opposed to feeling the need for homes on both coasts, a vacation villa in the Caribbean (which is what they could buy with AT&T’s cash).
Check T-Mobiles earnings, they are not going anywhere for some time, but they need to find a white knight. I’m on T-Mobile and want the iPhone.
Earnings are still weak, and when they don’t have a future with the support of money being dropped in the pipeline they are doomed.
I agree with the others, I have watched them close they are not as strong as you think and performance shows with no infusion of new products and with the different Radio spectrum they use (limited) it is almost a certain they can’t survive more then a year or two without a buyout.
T-mobile is dead within that time without a big change and better spectrum support.
T-Mobile is a real good Company, and all they need is the iPhone.
Lots of the Customers have left to get the iPhone on other Carriers.
I for one is still staying Put on T-Mobile because i do love their Service, and i do hope the Merger fails.
ATT Sucks.
im glad it’s good in your area, it’s sucked in my area for years. T-Mobile lost some towers years ago in south KC and the service is sliding greatly.
Personally, I hope T-mobile die, and painfully.
A few years ago I helped program some ringtones for the German T-mobile. They were very happy with them, saying they were among the best ringtones they’d ever heard. But they wouldn’t pay for the last batch of them, even though one (the Miss Marple Theme) was in their top 5 and would easily have paid our fee on its own. Typical big business bastards!
