When iPhone 5 will arrive and what it may feature

“Reports are rolling in that seem to confirm that Apple Inc.’s next-generation iPhone will land next month, setting the blogs and rumor mills abuzz,” Cromwell Schubarth reports for Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal.

“Exactly when the iPhone 5 will be in stores is not known, with some saying the first week of October and others saying not until the second half of the mont,” Schubarth reports. “There are also conflicting reports on whether there will be one or two new iPhones, a state of the art iPhone 5 and an entry level iPhone 4G S that will sell for less. The latest on this comes in a report that European iPhone service provider Vodafone has four iPhone 5 models listed for sale next month, with 16GB and 32GB and in black or white, but with no mention of an iPhone 4G S.”

Schubarth reports, “According to reports last week, Asian factories are turning out 150,000 of the new devices a day and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is preparing to sell 22 million iPhone 5s in the last three months of the year.”

  1. Shouldn’t we be seeing invitations for a media event at AAPL HQ shortly? It’s getting about that time — especially if they anticipate unveiling the new iPhone in time for those rumored Oct launch dates.

They may (but I seriously doubt it) simply begin rotating in the next iPhone releases like they do with the Macs — wake up one day, read a blurb on some Mac blog or other, and see that they’ve updated it overnight.

  2. The Back-to-school promo end date has always been the reliable indicator of iPod refresh dates, people! This year the last day for this promo is 9/20, which means new iPods shortly thereafter, if not on 9/21 itself. So invites should go out either today or tomorrow for a Wed event.

  3. I’m getting a little worried about the lack of media event invites too. I’m thinking the invites have to go out any day now. I don’t think they’ll launch without a media event, as Apple has been doing media events just for the iPods. They’ve got a new iOS to show off too.

My guess is that there will be 2 new iPhones. One, perhaps called the iPhone 5, and one which will be the cheaper version. However, the cheaper version won’t be today’s iPhone 4. I’m thinking the cheaper version will also be universal GSM/CDMA and all around less expensive…less storage, less ram, no retina display, etc…

I really do hope Apple ups the storage max to at least 64GB.
