Apple’s worst icons

“Apple has built a well deserved reputation for impeccable design in both its hardware and operating systems, but even the best designers can get lazy,” Dr. Macenstein writes.

“Here’s a quick tribute to some of Apple’s worst icon blunders of the past couple years,” Dr. Macenstein writes.

Mac Sharing icon

Sharing. Nothing says “sharing” like a… um… say, what is that? A “man crossing the road” sign? I can’t tell. It’s too small to really tell what it is, so we’ll have to guess. I think maybe it’s a baker bringing cupcakes to an orphanage.

Apple iTunes icon

iTunes never had a great icon, but iTunes 10, with its rounded design, is the worst of the lot. In fact, pretty much all of Apple’s circular icons blow.

  1. The iTunes icon is perfectly fine. I don’t understand the hate. The one that I’ve been waiting forever to see die is the “Welcome to Macintosh” startup icon — the split smiley face. Wasn’t that design added in the early 1990s to convey that the OS was clone friendly? And didn’t Steve kill the clone program almost 15 years ago? WTF?

  2. Every Finder sidebar icon in Lion should be in the article. The Desktop icon looks more like the front view of a laser printer than the desktop. And gray-scale icons. Whose idea was that, an East Berlin refugee? The Wall came down 20 years ago, we have color monitors now…

  3. What’s with all this jump on the bandwagon like a like vampire hunting mob with pitch forks and torches? Have you people not seen how others are stealing these exact icons for their copycat phones and tablets. Show me one icon on another system not influenced by Aplle icons. Well you might be able to pull out a couple but the majority are copied by the copyists’.

  4. People say they hate things but they really don’t. It was just slow news week and something had to said about round icons. The new iTunes Icon looks great in my Dock.

The sharing Icon is me crossing the lounge room on my way to the little room. Just thought I would share that with you!

  5. Mr Flat-face always raised a smile. It’s as if the designers had clocked off and forgotten to do the last icon… so the janitor was wheeled in to knock it up in a rush. Apple kept it for years too!
