Why Apple is so successful

“As many of you know, I have been covering Apple for 30 years. Over the course of that time, I have often been stumped by the incredible loyalty of Mac, iPod, iPhone, and now iPad users all over the world,” Tim Bajarin reports for PC Magazine. “In some cases, that loyalty is backed by an almost religious fervor. Mac worshippers aggressively defend Apple and its new legion of fans, especially those now with iPads, are almost evangelistic in the way they talk about the device, show it off to their friends, and attempt to convert them.”

“This level of loyalty can be traced back to before Apple even released the Mac. The company’s fervent followers, circa the Apple II, embraced Jobs and Wozniak’s creed that computers should be affordable to all, not just the computer professionals in business and higher education,” Bajarin reports. “When the Mac vowed to make the computer more user-friendly, new disciples pledged allegiance to Apple.”

“But is the reason more people are buying Apple’s products simply because Apple creates clean and dependable products? Partly, yes. But I’ve had a nagging feeling inside that this only explains half of the reason. Last year, I came across a Ted Talk by Simon Sinek titled ‘How Great Leaders Inspire Action’ that helped me get a better handle on this question,” Bajarin reports. “I highly recommend you spend 18 minutes and watch it, as it explains not only why Apple is successful but why major leaders like the Wright Brothers and Martin Luther King, Jr., were so effective as well.”

  1. Apple is successful because people buy their shit. Oh and a little thing called innovation – not some tired adjective like ‘I-N-V-E-N-T’ that HP uses for its tagline but true rabbit out of the hat innovation that overturns the landscape of tech because of Steve-O’s obsessive attention to detail and desire to make computers that the rest of us can use without breaking our noodle on arcane code and DOS command line.

  2. Oh good grief… could tech writers please stop using such hackneyed, tired religious allegories when talking about Apple? It’s so cliche and doesn’t add anything to the discussion, especially in an era when more and more regular folks are buying Apple products.

  3. what utter rubbish I read here.
Apple is successful because it altered it’s marketing strategy to include chavs. That’s what Tim Cook was good for.
Now everyone buys into the marketing nonsense, not just the geeks.
Look around you for gods sake!

    1. I’d certainly agree that media hacks often fall for boosting a largely self-created hype, and disseminate a fair amount of nonsense on that theme, but remember that little or none of it originates with Apple.

The main reason for Apple success seems to be a stem-to-stern quality product, in which soft- and hardware link to provide a near seamless experience.

I’m talking from a hard-headed biz perspective here, as Apple equipment pays for my daily bread, and if there were a better solution, I’d go for it instantly.

As for targeting ‘chavs’, well why not? I can’t see any reason for geek-level and above to be sole owners of decent machinery.

  4. Apple is so successful because they don’t churn out lousy products like seemingly everybody else in the consumer electronics business.

Anybody searching for a different explanation is trying to avoid the reality of this, which apparently makes them uncomfortable for some reason.

    1. Thank you. It’s a company. It’s a business. It’s not a religion. Great game plan. Great leadership. Great quality control. Great follow through. Great marketing. But I guess it just suits many to try and romanticize and hero worship that the truth is simply glossed over. Hey, go for it. Whatever makes ya feel good. In the end AAPL will make great stuff and shareholders money. And that’s what really matters. Not the ability to accept reality.

  5. Oh boy, that Ted video again. It is very good though.

Apple is successful in a very unique way. They do things the hard way, and it shows. “People who are serious about software should make their own hardware”… That’s the hard way.

That’s always been the vision at Apple, and they are the only ones who do it. It’s been an extremely long term strategy, which is now paying off. It’s the right way to make a product, and everyone knows it. No one else does it.

It’s like going on a diet for two weeks vs. living a healthy lifestyle.

  6. The real reason why Apple is so successful and why their success is in their DNA is because of –
