AT&T’s 4G LTE network goes live in Chicago; tests reveal impressive speeds

“AT&T’s 4G LTE network went live this past weekend in the Chicago area, and initial speed tests reveal impressive download speeds,” Zach Epstein reports for BGR.

“AT&T has yet to announce the availability of LTE service in Chicago or any other launch market, but BGR has obtained exclusive images and speed test results from a source who has tested the network there,” Epstein reports. “Our source used an AT&T Elevate 4G LTE mobile hotspot to perform speed tests in the Chicago area. Using both an iPhone 4 and a MacBook connected to the Elevate via Wi-Fi, he found that download speeds topped out at around 13Mbps and upload speeds reached just over 2Mbps.”

Epstein reports, “It should be noted, however, that the speeds achieved during these tests do not necessarily represent the data speeds AT&T subscribers will see once the network officially goes live.”

  1. “It should be noted, however, that the speeds achieved during these tests do not necessarily represent the data speeds AT&T subscribers will see once the network officially goes live.”

No kidding. Add a few hundred thousand simultaneous data streams and see what happens. Talk about meaningless performance data…

    1. AT&T can’t handle connecting to cell phones without dropping the call. How is it going to handle simultaneous data connections.
The test is valid. AT&T can support one user per metropolitan area, and these are the speeds that lucky person will get.

    1. Actually, all they need to do is to finalize their T-Mobile purchase and they will have 4G in few months.
I am sticking with AT&T. Verizon is back to it’s old tricks, Sprint… well, it’s Sprint.

  2. Guys spent about two weeks at the towers near my home ….. They moved down the 3G dishes about 30 feet and installed the new 4G where the old ones where ……

As to timing the guys could only say they knew nothing and had no clues, either ….. I asked several at different times with different type questions and got the same answers …. They. Knew nothing about the timing of the 4G ….

They have been gone for about a week and no new activity at the tower ….

  3. What no one seems to get, is that those speeds are of course throttled even to the single tester. Granted, that under load, it will probably be slower, but it ultimately will still be faster than what’s available now.
