As bad as it seems now, beleaguered Nokia’s future looks even worse

“After revising its earnings estimates downward in May, on Thursday Nokia shared abysmal results for the second quarter,” Kevin C. Tofel reports for GigaOM.

“The onetime clear leader of the first smartphone era has tumbled down to what looks like the third spot for smartphone sales, definitely behind Apple and likely behind Samsung as well,” Tofel reports. “My first reaction to [the] results was twofold: one of sympathy and one of optimism. I thought to myself that one of Elop’s major actions so far, choosing Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform for the future, was akin to quickly yanking a Band-Aid from a wound: Sometimes it’s best to just get the pain over with. But after digesting the news a little more and thinking about the path Nokia traveled to get to its current low point, I don’t see how the bleeding is going to stop this year, now that the Band-Aid is off.”

Here are five reasons why:
1. Feature phones can’t save the day
2. Existing smartphones aren’t helping
3. A smartphone answer doesn’t exist yet
4. Android squeezes at the top and bottom
5. Nokia’s brand is tarnished

  1. Reason #6 as to why the bleeding won’t stop:

    6. Their future smart phones will be running software created by Microsoft.

(Same reason I won’t sit in a Ford with the engine running.)

  2. Android squeezes at the top and bottom? Huh? It’s the iPhone that brings pressure from the top. If all Nokia had to contend with was Android, they’d have a lot more breathing room.

  3. What’s the sound of 10,000 toilets flushing simultaneously in Finland?

    FLISH-FLASH-FLUSH-N-O-K-I-A!!!

Don’t forget to switch the lights off when you leave.

  4. remember IDCs (stupid fantasy) prediction that Nokia WP7 will be bigger than iPhone by 2015?

IDC projects 67% yearly growth rate for Nokia WP7 so that : ” By 2015, we expect Windows Phone to be the No. 2 operating system.” IDC also said Apple will not gain any marketshare and STAGNATE at 15% which will be at 2015 the SAME as Blackberry will only slip 1% !!

see why analysts are a joke?

(WP7 sales suck even though it was launched on 60 carriers with a $500 million ad campaign. 500 m equals Apple’s TOTAL ad budget – iPods, macs, iPhone, software etc of 2009. If all that couldn’t sell WP7s how is Nokia going to change the situation?)

  5. “Nokia’s brand is tarnished”

Oh hooey! Nokia never had a great reputation. Like RIM, they were the best of poorly conceived technology that few but the worst technoDorks wanted. They had a great run in the absence of any true competition, but it was the iPhone that raised the bar so high that it made other products look silly. People forget: before the iPhone came along there was no touch interface, no visual voicemail, no true web browser, emails always listed backwards …. and the annoyance list list goes on.
