Anticipating Apple earnings

“Here’s the thing about Apple’s earnings announcement today: It’s even more of a puzzle than usual,” Jon Fortt reports for CNBC. “Why? Mainly the iPhone.”

“Typically, Apple introduces a new iPhone at the end of June, creating a revenue surge and bringing lots of traffic to Apple Stores for weeks after,” Fortt reports.

But this year Apple has delayed the launch of a new iPhone, which raises a few questions:
• Will Apple give a lower-than-usual guidance number because of the later iPhone launch? And if so, will that spook the street?
• Did iPhone 4 sales come in higher than usual because shoppers weren’t expecting a new phone any moment?
• Did margins come in higher because of (a) the iPhone 4’s longer run (b) higher device volume and (c) low component costs?

Fortt reprots, “Add in the fact that Apple’s cash hoard is likely to go above 70 billion dollars, and, well — it’s going to be an interesting report.”

  1. After all this pre-earnings hype, Apple better not let me down this quarter. Today, I see that all the power stocks like Netflix, Google, Intuitive Surgical, Amazon, VMWare are flying higher than Apple. It looks like a strong market and a good launch point for Apple earnings. If Apple drops because they miss some single number, I’m gonna be seriously pissed. I don’t want to see another good quarter get tossed in the trashbin. As powerful as Apple is, why do I even have to be concerned? I just can’t depend on the stock market’s response when it comes to Apple when good is never good enough. Is a 7% share pop asking for too much or are they going to say it’s already run up too high in the past week? It better not let me down this quarter.

    1. Down a buck after hours. We’ll know soon. I have a bad feeling. I hope not but AAPL has been punished in the past despite great results. Sold some stock and calls early today. Still holding most of my AAPL stock and a few Aug 355 calls. It’s never boring with AAPL!

  2. Sigh again with the US-centric time zones. 96% of the world has no idea how EDT or PDT relate to their own corner of the world because they have no need to know. But they do know how their own time zone relates to GMT. In a globally-integrated world, it seems only courteous to report times according to the one standard that everyone knows.

      1. Amen. If he doesn’t like the “US-centric” time zone who cares? No one in the US. Funny how jealous people all over the world are of the US. They all wish they were Americans. And I don’t mean South Americans! I’m proud to be an American! And I love our time zones. All 4! GMT. Who cares?

        1. BTW, GM, if you include all US states and territories, we have at least 7 time zones (Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska-Hawaii, and Aleutian-Guam).

        2. my pride in being American is always dampened by people who seem to think the world exists between the edge of california and the eastern edge of new york. this country is extremely dependent on other countries and cultures for our economy, creativity, and, for some, for friendships. i work outside of the US on film projects frequently and find very few people who are jealous of any country and certainly don’t wish to be another culture than their own. there’s really a whole world of interesting things out there.

  3. Eastern Standard Time: GMT – 5
Eastern Daylight (Summer) Time: GMT – 4
Pacific Standard Time: GMT – 8
Pacific Daylight (Summer) Time: GMT – 7

Therefore, Apple’s earnings call should begin at 2100 GMT.
