Apple’s updated AirPort Extreme gives 2.8X power boost to Wi-Fi

“The new AirPort Extreme was quietly released by Apple this week with no mention of new features, but it actually has increased power output for increased Wi-Fi signal strength and range,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“When broadcasting 802.11n Wi-Fi in 40Mhz wide mode, the new AirPort Extreme has a maximum output power of 392.64mW, which is more than 2.8 times greater than the 139.32mW maximum output of the previous model,” Hughes reports.

Hughes reports, “The details come from technical documents filed this week with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.”

    1. Speed doesn’t change – it’s still 802.11n, however, the distance the signal carries is greater. Probably quite helpful for anyone living in a large house, or on properties with multiple structures. For me, it would be OTT since the computer and router are in the same room.

      1. That would be me. I bought the Extreme, plus an Airport Express, in an attempt to send wifi to two outbuildings. I was going to buy a second Express to improve the signal. Looks like I will have to get the new device for starters. It’s only money…

    1. If you carry a smartphone in your pocket all day (and often have it pressed against your head), I’d be “a bit” more concerned about that source of radio waves. 😉

I have the original square 802.11n Airport Extreme Base Station. Still going strong, although it’s not so “extreme” anymore…

      1. ROFLMFAO. Seriously, I’ve read some funny stuff on MDN but, aaaaaaahhaaahaahahaha oohhh my sides, ohhh I can’t breathe….hahaha…ohhh stop it you’re kiiiilling me

  1. Pfff, so!
Apple changed FCP it is taking food out of my childrens mouth. Seriously, my family and I are going to starve and then end up in debtors prison because Apple the evil empire changed FCP.

    J/K y’all

    1. Off the subject, but… Actually, it’s you who are taking food out of your children’s mouths when you waste time whining instead of learning how to use the new FinalCut. One of the developers of the original FCP says the new product is a big step forward. But you would rather complain about the loss of a ten-year-old product. Your choice.

    1. We can only wonder why this concept hasn’t been done already with both AT&T and Verizon. Heck why not even just have an unlocked sim slot in the base station for GSM versions.

  2. Nuclear radiation is also electromagnetic radiation. The difference is that nuclear radiation is at a wave length and energy level that can cause ionization when interacting with matter. The bands that cell phones and radios operate at do not.
