RUMOR: Apple to release iPad 3 with ultra-high resolution Retina display in time for Christmas

“A new rumor suggests that Apple will release an iPad 3 in the fourth quarter,” Jared Newman reports for PCWorld.

“Apple’s next iPad will have an image resolution five to six times higher than the iPad 2, according to Reuters,” Newman reports. “The rumor comes from Taiwan’s Economic Daily, which in turn cites unnamed industry sources. This month, Asian research firm CSLA said that an iPad 3 will launch by Christmas.”

Newman reports, “It’s possible that Apple will release a high-resolution iPad alongside the existing generation, rather than replace the iPad 2 outright, as John Gruber, a well-connected Apple blogger, speculated last February. But really, there’s not enough solid information available, and pinning down exactly what Apple is going to do in six months is tricky.”

  1. Have iPad 1. Have iPad 2. I doubt this will happen ’til next March. But if it does happen i’ll be happy to buy it too. And I won’t complain it happened too soon. I will always buy new iPad models on day one every time they ship. Also buying the new A5 top of the line iPod Touch in September.

  2. Something tells me this is not going to happen…
“an image resolution five to six times higher than the iPad 2”

I can see double the res, and honestly it really doesn’t need more than that… Screen size now is damn near perfect.

    1. Agreed – the 9.7″ diagonal iPad2 display is currently 1024-by-768-pixels at 132 pixels per inch (ppi). There is *no way* that Apple is going to increase iPad display resolution to five times – 5120-by-3840 (660 ppi) – or six times – 6144-by-4608 (792 ppi) its current level. I don’t even know if there is a PC graphics adapter to drive such a display, much less a low power mobile solution. Where do these ridiculous rumors come from and why is MDN posting fantasy concepts?

As a point of reference, the 27″ Apple Cinema Display is only 2560 by 1440 pixels.

  3. There’s no earthly reason for Apple to release a new iPad model in September when the rest of the ‘iPad killer zombies’ are busy administering self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

      1. I agree. I think Apple came out with iPhone/iPad the months that they did purely based upon availability – too late for christmas and early enough to get a head start.

I think the strategy is to get closer to the prime shopping season for consumers – rumors or not.

  4. This doesn’t sound right to me.

Apple usually locks down their product line for the holidays after the September iPod launch. This year, rumor and speculation has it that September will be iPods and the new iPhone.

Would Apple launch a new iPad 3 so soon?
Would Apple launch a new iPad 3 and a new iPhone (5?) at the same time (along with new iPods)?

Apple stores would be totally insane during the holidays.

One thing that does make sense…

A September launch is a good time for Apple to launch consumer devices. It makes them hot during the holidays and fresh during CES. Also, Apple may be planning other products that it wants to launch in the beginning of 2012.

  5. Let’s report on news….not rumor!!!! Really you think Apple will release a iPad 3 in December, when they can hardly keep up with demand for iPad 2. People get your heads out of your asses….do you really think that Apple would release a new iPad so close to a IOS update for a thats happening in the Fall??? Some times people just like to write dumb ass stuff to stay relevant…..or think they are relevant.

    1. Yep – even doubling the resolution in both directions to 2048 * 1532 would still fall short of the 300 dpi that Apple would want in order to call it a “Retina Display”. You’d have to go to 2560 * 1440 or similar to cross the “Retina” threshold, and that’s a hellaciously high resolution for a 9.7″ screen.

  6. Oh well, than I will just have to wait for december instead of buying an iPad now. There are just too many rumors concerning an iPad 3 with a retina display to igmore, they’ ve been going on even before the iPad 2 came out. Something fishy going on here.

  7. Answer=No. They DON’T need to start the world constantly thinking, “I shouldn’t buy this iPad, Apple may come out with a new one in a few months.” Once a year is how they’ll keep doing it Then most of the time, even if you ARE informed about release cycles, you’ll know it’ll be a WHILE before a new one makes you feel like you should have waited.

  8. Higher Rez & more memory.
    Call it iPad Pro.
MacBook and MacBook pro live in harmony, why can’t iPads?
Oh, right because the people who just bought iPad 2 would feel slighted.
    Guess what?
    Shit happens.

  9. I’d be happy if Apple simply gave us true 720p (1280×720), which corresponds to their HD movie and TV downloads.

I have a plasma providing native 1024×768 resolution – the same as the iPad. But with the needed interpolation it’s clear when I’m watching a 720p or 1080i broadcast that I’m not getting true HD.

    1. If your TV has a native (on screen) resolution of 1024 x 768, you’re not getting HD anyway. For HD, your TV would require an on-screen resolution of at least 1280 x 720.

  10. This does not make sense, and I would surprised if Apple did release a new product within a year from when they just released the previous generation. Apple is not that desperate to stay ahead of the competition when they already are in so many ways. iPad 2 was released in U.S. Mar 11/11, and most other countries on Mar 25/11, with the last countries Russia and Ukraine on May 27/11. Apple has to make back enough profits on this line to make back the desired profit levels before releasing the next generation. Lets remember that rumours are rumours and nothing is official until Apple announces it publicly. Everything short of that is just speculation… some of which is not even common sense.

  11. iPad 3 this year makes no sense if they are adding retina display. When apple introduces a new iOS device, it has new features. Unless this iPad 3 has an A6 processor with 1GB memory, I’d see it being true. But for apple to release a new iPad with just one new feature (retina display) won’t happen unless they plan on replacing the iPad 2, which is also unlikely. So this whole story is stupid.
