Apple buys iCloud.com for rumored $4.5 million

“Apple has taken ownership of the domain iCloud.com,” Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors.

“The domain was believed to have been sold to Apple for a price tag of $4.5 million,” Kim reports. “Prior to today, the whois domain registration listed Xcerion as the owner.”

MacDailyNews Note: Currently, iCloud.com redirects to another Xcerion site, CloudMe.com.

Kim reports, “This change in domain registration information means Apple has control of the domain and will be able to redirect it to their own site… Apple is also now listed as owner of iCloud.org as well.”

  1. Apple had to do this now if they wanted all of the internet DNS to be updated for next week. It takes about 5 days for all the internet pointers to read and reset the IP addresses.

This is like having to let the FCC know about a product like AppleTV in order to market it months later. It is a sad twist on Steve’s “Just one more thing” at show time.
