Survey: Apple iPhone poised for big gains in China

“There’s good news for Apple in the results of an Alphawise/Morgan Stanley survey released Tuesday,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

MacDailyNews Take: We were just saying that what Apple needed right about now was some more good news. 😉

P.E.D. continues, “The survey, conducted among a sample of 2,029 Chinese mobile phone users in February and March, found demand for smartphones to be surprisingly strong. 88% of respondents said they expected the next phone they bought would be a smartphone. And 30% of those who planned to buy a 3G phone said they expected to buy an iPhone, even at its current price. If price were not a consideration, that number would jump to 53%, according to the survey.”

  1. Fiscal 2011 China could contribute $11 billion in sales!
Just da begining of a long friendship in business.
As China economy grows so will AAPL China revenue.

    Buy AAPL stocks B4 2015 = $828 bucks 🙂

  2. I’m in China right now… I’ve gotta say there are more iPhones in Mainland China than I was expecting, and I’m in the South (not near any major cities really). It’s pretty remarkable.

I flew into Hong Kong (from LAX), then made my way into Mainland China… Taking a flight into Hong Kong gives you a taste of the world. People from everywhere are on flights to Hong Kong.

With that said… There were more iPhones and iPads on that airplane than I could count. It looked like an Apple Store!! Mind boggling.

  3. So what does Apple need to do to win the hearts of the lower-salaried Chinese? How about a special Chinese edition iPhone with very little memory and a low-price tag? 30% iPhone market share allows 50% Android and 20% Symbian market share. Can Foxconn even manage to make that many iPhones for Apple as what the China market share might require?

  4. try writing chinese on an iPhone then try doing it on a blackberry keyboard ! then you’ll see why iPhone, iPad is going to be big chinese (asian) winners,

Apple knew this already quietly buying Chinese character recognition tech HWPen etc. years ago.

Schools in Singapore (90% chinese population) are already test deploying iPads.

  5. I’m thinking that Apple should continue production of the 3GS and continue selling it worldwide for $99 to combat cheap Android phones. Those that can afford the iPhone 4/5 will still get the latest gear, so I don’t think there would be any cannibalization. Just a weaker Android selling point.

    1. The $99USD price-point largely depends on carrier-subsidy. And iPhones/iPads are wholly purchased (via the gray-market) when they get in the hands of Chinese consumers. Lowering material costs of iOS devices is going to be required to achieve (deeper) market penetration.
