American Cancer Society Chief Medical Officer: It’s impossible to estimate life expectancy based on photographs

Matthew Herper reports for Forbes, “The National Enquirer has reported that Steve Jobs has only six weeks to live based the paper’s analysis of photographs that purportedly show the Apple founder. Hogwash.”

“Even if the photographs are real, the estimate of how much time Jobs has left, or any speculation about his condition, is baseless,” Herper reports. “You don’t have to take my word on that – you can listen to Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society and a noted oncologist.

“‘Based on a photograph or even based of a videotape of someone giving a presentation on stage, it is impossible to make an estimation of someone’s life expectancy,’ says Brawley. What’s more, he says, it’s not even really possible to make those kinds of estimates after a real exam,” Herper reports. “‘I can’t look at someone’s picture and immediately say they’re sick,’ says Brawley.”

  1. Although his ailment is different, Professor Stephen Hawking is the champion of defying the “experts” (who said he would survive only two or three years after being diagnosed with ALS). He’s been defying them (doctors who actually examined him), while continuing his brand of one-of-a-kind brilliance, for over THIRTY years.

    1. Sell-off? All I see is a 1.3% dip. Over the past few years, AAPL has dipped more then fifty times (while the rest of the market ended up positive), when there were no news on Jobs’s health.

If the dip is related to these articles, it is insignificant. It has barely touched the previous all-time high close (two days ago).

    2. Sell off? Not much of one. AAPL is down less than $5; these days, AAPL goes up or down $5 on a “normal” day. A $5 change is less than 1.5%. More and more, the price of AAPL is NOT tied to every tabloid rumor about Steve Jobs.

  2. Recently there was a photo in one of those tabloids showing Osama bin Laden marrying Kim Jong Il (Kim was the bride of course). I mean photos don’t lie. And the headline said it right there so it must be true. Osama looked very happy and excited about it all.

    1. Cubert, medicine is just a profession it doesn’t represent a unity such as those who studied it in anything other than exactly that, unfortunately people are people and their decisions are most of the times independent. So that’s a good for you.
