“I was pretty interested as a consumer when Apple introduced the Mac App Store. Reading through Apple’s developer guidelines, one of the first things I noticed was that apps can’t be designed with any sort of license key,” Michael Gartenberg writes for Macworld. “None. Nada. Zero. And when you read the Mac App Store terms of use, you discover that consumers are allowed to install the software they purchase on as many computers as they own and use. If it’s tied to your iTunes account, it’s legit.”
Gartenberg writes, “Apple’s approach is simple. It’s an honor thing. The company believes that, given the choice, people will do the right thing. It also understands that anti-piracy techniques don’t stop pirates, but they do get in the way of honest users… It’s an honor thing. And that’s a good thing.”

Apple trusts people NOT to steal, everybody actually BUYS the product, feels good about themselves, save a ton of money, love the product, love Apple and wonder why MS charges so much.
I had a business partner once who spent almost all of his time chasing after shoplifters, employee pilfering, and bad checks. His efforts produced maybe $5000 per year. His salary was over $100K. I couldn’t convince him that he was wasting money chasing after the petty crooks, or that if he spent his time implementing changes to our business strategy and new ideas we might see more profit. He was a typical conservative thinker.
After we parted ways he quickly went bankrupt. I’ve never had any patience with that kind of thinking since then.

It’s a simple formula:
Treat a customer with respect and they will treat you back with respect.
Treat a customer as a criminal and they will gladly oblige if only out of revenge for your vile stupidity.
