“We’ve done some digging in the latest SDK it looks like Apple’s much rumored second-generation iPad will not feature some fancy 5 megapixel camera, but will instead shoot your flicks and take your pics with something close to a 1 megapixel camera,” Mark Gurman reports for 9 to 5 Mac.
“That’s awfully close to the fourth-generation iPod touch’s 0.7 megapixel back camera so we speculate they could be the same thing,” Gurman reports. “That means you’ll be able to take some unwieldy 720P video with your iPad.”
Gurman reports, “As for the front, it’s VGA, just like the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. The front-facer for FaceTime and taking pictures of yourself will do video recording too.”

I call BS on that. Won’t be just 1MP
If true, the web will be full of derogatory comments. But then, people don’t buy an iPad to take pictures.
Why would th iPad have such a limited camera compared to the iPhone? Doesn’t make sense.
cause Jobs isn’t there they are back pedaling wholes he’s not looking. hahaha
The iPhone 4 has a 5 MP (720p HD) rear-facing camera, and a 0.3 MP (VGA) front camera. The iPad 2 possibly getting a 1 MP rear-facing cam instead of 5 MP may make since, in that people would normally take photos with their iPhone, not the iPad. Hard to say what Apple’s logic behind it is.
Seems to me, the iPad form factor is good for Facetime. But not as good for taking photos. So, a decent rear (FaceTime) camera, but no need for a 5 MP front camera.
If the iPad 2 gets cameras then they should be the same as the iPhone 4 though you might think this would add a lot to the price especially if a new dual core ARM chip is used. And price would be the only consideration for using a 1mpx camera. I can see real estate agents disappointed by this though maybe 1mpx will be adequate for anyone using the iPad for business shooting pics for web posting.
Maybe it’s 2012 iPad 3 for 5-8 mpx. Only Jobs/Cook know for sure.
Maybe 1mp is just a place holder, to not give away the true resolution.
I call BS on that. Won’t be just 1MP
“rear-facing” camera?
Sounds, sexual. I’m just sayin’.
I don’t see the use for a rear facing camera for the iPad.. It would look akward just taking the picture. That’s why we have iPhones..
I really do hope the iPad gets a decent camera – it’ll make a better platform for steady picture taking than you might think.
Using a two-handed approach, it’ll make a big and stable photographic platform, along the lines of the sheet-film cameras of old.
Using a tripod, you could even go under a shroud and look like a Victorian-era snapper in action!
I don’t think BS could be called enough on this, so let me call BS too.
What I wouldn’t give to see the person going over to Jobs and showing him the iPad with a 1MP camera:
“See look, you can take pictures”
Then shows him the 1MP on the new iPad display with unbelievably high resolution.
People will want to take pictures on iPads. Think of field usage for vertical markets. It’s not always practical to assume that an iPhone is going to be part of the field package…and even if it is, why fumble around with two devices?
B U L L C R A P
There is NO reason for that. The iPod Touch was simply too thin for a better camera but the iPad is thicker than the iPhone 4 (not to mention the HUGE empty space inside)
Holding up a 10″ iPad to take pictures is idiotic.
Well you know, not having two camera’s on the iPad will make it a practically useless.
Are you telling me that if I’m Skyping with my mother trying to show her my new couch, I have to bring along my iPhone and put down my iPad.
And a 1 MP camera…well maybe, Apple has been light years behind on the camera feature for everything EXCEPT being the first to embed them in their laptops.
It’s like they started the trend….then totally dropped the ball.
OR MAYBE, that was the plan, to start the trend, and then let their competitors to pay for the manufacturing and R&D of perfecting it and then go from there…
either way, I think it’s time for them to start to use decent cameras.
KenC have you thought about trying to show someone something (like maybe your new house) while you’re skyping with them on your iPad?
No?
Because what you just said was the attitude at the Apple Stores when I asked. I nicely pointed out that if that’s the case, the iPad would be put down a lot during conversations BECAUSE they would have to use some other device.
Idiotic? No, what’s idiotic is to regress with features because you think that people wouldn’t want to use even though it’s a feature they’re use to.
I think it will have a camera facing both directions, if for no other reason than expectation, even if usability will be poor. There are customers (and even product reviewers) who simply compare the spec sheet. Look, the Galaxy Tab has cameras and iPad does not… I’m getting the Galaxy Tab.
But I’d like Apple to create a clever Bluetooth camera that connects wirelessly to iPad. Such a camera can be placed and aimed independently of iPad’s orientation and position, so you won’t have a “crouch-cam” angle for FaceTime or sore muscles from having to hold your iPad steady with both hands in an awkward position for a long time. I’ve previously suggested that such a “camera accessory” could actually be a fully-functioning iPod that works with iPad OR independently; like LAST year’s iPod nano except slightly thicker (to accommodate a good camera and bigger battery). And it would give the 15 million plus owners of the current iPad a FaceTime upgrade; Apple could also make it work with Macs, so that Mac mini and Mac Pro owners without an LED Cinema Display can have an Apple-supplied web cam.
@ken1w
Check out the app, “http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camera-for-ipad/id366129244?mt=8”. It turns your iPhone into a wireless bluetooth camera for the iPad
@ Chris
Yes, that’s the basic idea, except fully supported by Apple so you can use FaceTime on an iPad, even one that currently has no built-in camera.
However, a “Bluetooth wireless camera” accessory would NOT cost over $200 (for a new iPod touch) or $200 plus monthly contract fee (for an iPhone), if you don’t already use of those devices. A camera accessory does not need to have a touch screen, A4 processor, system RAM, flash storage, GPS, gyroscope, etc. plus WiFi and/or 3G, so Apple should be able to offer it for $99 or less. If it happens to also function as an iPod, Apple can use the basic design of last year’s iPod nano, with simple click-wheel interface. And it would have some clever built-in “kick stand,” so it can be placed and aimed without the need to hold it (and your iPad).
Omg omg a 1mp camera. This is revolutionay and magical!! Apple does it again. What a delitious and elegant solution.
Thanks steve for changing the world again!! N
I also hope for a good rear facing camera. I would like to use it like a large frame camera. I’ll bet that it would encourage some really good and interesting photo apps, better than those that exist today for iPhone/iPod Touch.
Like all the people who felt the iPad would never sell, those who minimize the use and importance of a decent rear facing camera are wrong in their conclusions.
I know it’s hard to believe but not all iPad owners have iPhones. So to suggest that people use their iPhones instead is not the best advice.
Some who have iPhones will still want to use the iPad for photos in a variety of situations.
whatever. I don’t care anymore. simply I just lost interest on Apple. nowadays, there are so many news on Apple whatever. I am just tired of it.
i thinkim going to buy a android tablet.
