Apple approves Google Latitude app

Apple Store“First announced in February 2009, the Google Latitude application for iPhone — previously rejected from the App Store — has been approved and is now available,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

“The free application allows users to see where their friends are at the moment, and share their current location as well,” Oliver reports. “Google Latitude uses the multitasking capabilities of iOS 4 and the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS to share a current location in the background via GPS.”

Features of Latitude, listed by Google, are:
• See your friends on a map — find out who’s nearby and meet up.
• Share your location continuously with whomever you choose — help friends and family stay in touch with you, even when you can’t take out your phone.
• Control your privacy — share only city-level information, hide your location, or turn off background updating at any time.

  1. I think Pandora’s Box has been opened on all these location based tracking services. Not sure it can be stopped now. Stalkers rejoice worldwide. So does the government. Wait. Sorry. Didn’t mean to be redundant. The foil hats have spoken.

  2. Someone tell me how this can be abused. In order to have someone know your location you have to send them a request and they have to respond. So as long as you don’t don’t accept invites from muggers how is it arming the criminals?

My wife & I put it on our phones today, and daughter will too when she gets off work. None of us seem to have any secret hideaways, so I think it’s going to be neat to be out somewhere and get a text that says “Your friend Marcy is nearby. Click to see her on a map.”

So how well do you trust your daughters friends, her boy friends, the boy friends friends? How about your wife’s co-workers, their husband or their husbands friend? What about all those facebook friends? What about those people from your church? A lot of upstanding religious folks are in jail for thief and sex crimes. I can’t remember the percentage but I recall reading that a very large percentage of home robberies domestic crimes we by people the victim knew.

I was not saying it didn’t have possible uses. I’m a parent and I too have concerns about my children and my spouse but at what cost.

Here is an article today on CNN that illustrates the point.

I’m sure you will educate your daugher about the use of such tools but there are many children that don’t get that education.
