  1. I just checked it again for the first time since they released Ping. It hasn’t improved. There is only one artist listed that I would follow.
This is like releasing a new Mac for which no software is available.
I can see the meeting room now.
Steve: Listen, I don’t know the first thing about social sites so you tell me, is this ready for Primetime?
Dumbass Ping Manager (probably someone from Lala who played a part in destroying that venue): Oh yeah, Steve, people are going to love this!!
Steve: Are you sure? Because it doesn’t look like anything to me – but then, neither does facebook.
Dumbass Ping Manager: Listen, You have a gazillion iTunes accounts, It we get even your 25% rabid fans that will bite on anything Apple, it will be a success.
Steve: Ok I hope you’re right – Like I said, I don’t know squat about being social – So let’s give it a try. It’ll be your ass if this thing flops…
Dumbass Ping Manager: No problem Steve, (under his breath – “I got so much from the Lala acquisition that I can retire any time and get out from under this pressure cooker anyway”)

    Weeks later
Steve: What the F%*#K??? I just checked ping again and it’s like nobody came to the party…
Dumbass Ping Manager: We’re tweaking things, Steve – They will come, I promise you that…
A year later – at the quarterly earnings report.
Steve, Sheepishly… Well, Looks like another Dot Mac – only worse – and no money, – oops – I thought those Lala guys knew more… Geez, I wish I knew anything about social…

  3. I think people are a bit confused as to what Ping is supposed to do. Its not, as @Tflint thinks,” Only insecure people need to know if their tastes conform with others. Mac users are non-conformists. Ping is for insecure teeny-boppers.” It is a tool to DISCOVER music that might be of interest to you based on what you currently have, or what others with the same musical TASTE may be buying. I dont think it is meant to be a place to dialogue with others, but more to see what they are listening to and you can check it out for yourself. If I like Michael Franti, I think it would be interesting to see what he listens to. I dont think I would follow Soulja Boy or whoever since this style of music is not what I listen to.

  5. @krquet: “The fact I liked most that iTunes didn’t force me to use my real name.”

Then likely you don’t have your real name on the credit card you use for billing. What I dislike most about Ping is how it explicitly forces you to use the same user moniker as the name on the billing information. Shouldn’t I be allowed to choose whether I want to be anonymous or not? At present I can’t both be an itunes customer and a Ping user unless I am willing to broadcast my identity to the whole world

  7. It’s really pointless and well yeah it’s nothing like I’m interested in using. Only American mainstream crap artists/bands is there to follow so it’s really not universal at least for now. Facebook/Twiiter search feature seems vital. But most of all it’s worthless for my case as long as with Genius because I prefer not to spend loads of money to get my music.
